My vehicle is a 97 Dodge Ram 1500, 115,000 miles..Recently had a complete
tune up including transmission fluid/filter change. The check engine light
comes on for about 1 day and a half and then all of a sudden on a random
engine start it goes out. It's been doing this for about 2 months, where the
light will come on unexpectedly while dring then stay on thorugh 3-4 engine
starts then all of a sudden on the next engine start not come on. I thought
the check engine light is suppose to stay on until the problem is fixed or
the batter is disconnected.

Art, OBD 11 will only leave the MIL illuminated for emmision related
malfunctions. The light will also indicate other driveline problems (trans
codes) as well as BCM related problems. A code will be stored. Get a scanner
on it and it will reveal whats putting the lamp on.

BTW, disconnecting the battery will not clear a code in OBD 11.

Maybe not in version eleven, but on my '95 with OBD-I, and my '99 with
OBD-II (that's Roman numeral two), disconnecting the battery for a bit would
most certainly clear any stored codes. On my '03, the codes are stored in
some kind of non-volatile memory, and do not clear with the batteries
disconnected. His '97 will forget all codes without power.
As for the CE light remaining lit, it depends on the particular problem
detected. Some problems will set the CEL and leave it on until manually
cleared... other events only illuminate the CEL when the problem is
actually existing.

Art is sounds as if you have a fault being set by the EGR Valve or an 02
Sensor, find out what code is in the memory.
