My transmission seems to sometimes 'forget' to shift. It will go through
the first two gears fine then will rev up to 3500rpm. I have to take my
foot off the accelerator and then it seems to shift into gear fine. It
does tis frequently. Also it doesn't shift into reverse right away. Any
suggestions?

Shift Solenoids. And, after over-reving for a while, you will probably get a
MIL lamp on with I believe a code 1540, indicating high governor pressure.
Replace the shift solenoids, service the trans and you should be in good
shape. BTW, when the problem occurs, you can most likely manually up-shift
the trans successfully. Hope this was a help.

I don't know about the problem with reverse, but we just had the identical
problem with our 99 ram...
Wouldn't shift into 3rd unless you backed off the gas... if you backed off but
didn't back off LONG enough, when you gave it gas it felt like it was in
neutral.. sound familiar?
They changed a valve body or something.. it helped but still shifted "not quite
right"... got progressively worse until the original problem came back.. (about
6 months and 3,000 miles later)
We just got it back after the dealer did a complete transmission rebuild... they
said that the oil was burnt and that there was metal in the fluid, etc... glad
we had that extended warranty!
