Fixed my tranny, now on to the next issue

Greetings,

I hope everybody had a great holiday.

Based upon some recommendations from the group, I finally got around to
fixing the tranny in my 2002 Dodge 3500 4x4 with the CTD.  The thing was
either starting out in second gear, or getting stuck in first gear.  I
dropped the pan (it was clean) and replaced the governor pressure sensor and
solenoid and it is shifting like a champ again.  I bought the parts from the
local dealer and the tab for the parts, fluid, filter and pan gasket was
around $260 out the door, which was still about $1,500 to $2,000 cheaper
then having the local tranny shop rebuild the thing.  It took all of about
an hour to do. I probably could have done it in 30 minutes if I had done it
before.  I should have put a drain plug in the bottom of the pan to make the
next fluid change easier, but I was in a hurry. I saw the same parts on ebay
for about 2/3 the price of what the dealer charged me, but I don't know if
the ebay parts were aftermarket or genuine Mopar.  Oh, and then I spent
about $65 on the biggest tranny cooler I could find and put it in series
with the stock one.

Anyway, the thing has a noticeable dull pop or thud when I turn to the left
at very slow speeds (a few miles an hour). Just one thud or pop.  It is kind
of hard to describe the noise.  It started a few thousand miles ago (the
truck has 85K on it now).  The left front tire was very much worn on the
inside edge.  The right front tire looked fine, although the treads were
just about down to the wear marks.  I just replaced both front tires and the
noise is still there. The tire shop could not align the thing because he
said the truck was too big for his rack (Dually, quad cab) and suggested I
take it to the dealer.  I am not sure an alignment will fix the problem
anyway. The truck does not pull to either side and brakes in a straight
line.  The shocks are original and it has never been aligned before.  It
makes no noise when I turn right.  The noise seems like it is coming from
directly below the drivers seat.

Anybody have any ideas on what the noise could be due to and what needs to
be done to fix it?

Sounds like a worn track bar ball joint.  The track bar is the rod that runs
from the driver's side frame rail to the front axle on the passenger side.
The frame mount is a ball joint, and wears out.  To verify, have someone
turn the steering back and forth (engine running) while you observe the
joint.  ANY movement indicates wear.  You can replace the entire bar, or you
can get a repair kit.  Do searches for 'Linstad track bar' and 'DT Profab
track bar'.
