Greetings,
I purchased a 1989 Dodge 150 w/ 85k miles, automatic transmission.
Sorry, not sure of transmission or engine make/model. After driving it
for about 20 minutes, I went from surface streets to highway. I began
a slow acceleration. I was able to hear a loud spinning noise with a
slight grinding as the the transmission began to shift. Next came a
loud clunk and the truck shook as the gears engaged, at least thats
what I think happened. This occurred with all shifts. If I stayed at
a given speed there was no issues. Previous owner states that he never
had this happen, but he hasn't had it over 35/45 mph in a year. Just
drove it to the store, dump, etc.
The fluid is low, just at the bottom of the line. My current plan of
action is to replace filter/fluid & tighten the bands. My question -
is it worth doing this or am I wasting my time and should just replace
the transmission?
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chaz

You can probably, emphasis on "probably", get by with the fluid and filter
change, but since you've got the pan off for the filter anyway, go ahead and
make the band adjustments also.

Your current plan of action is a viable diagnostic step to
remedy your concerns.
Any input..???.......
ok.......
the previous owner is most likely lieing about NEVER going over
45mph in the last year.
the symptoms, as posted, are extremely likely to be found on a
transmission that is low on fluid.

I have many, many, many times fixed the symptom as you have posted
it.....by just adding fluid to a transmission.

that needs to be overhauled.
if it were me......i'd do the service.

Just an fyi - Not sure if it was the low fluid or the bands, but fixed
both and it is running fine. The adjustment bolt for the lower bands
was way off, so that may have been it. Again, thanks for the advice.

Glad to be of assistance.
Low fluid will cause bands / clutches to wear faster and need adjustment
more often. I suggest you check the fluid once a week until you get a feel
for how often it needs fluid, since it appears to lose some over time.
