Transmission/driveshaft noise 2006 Dodge Ram

Whenever the shifter is put in park from any other position, a loud "clunk"
is heard from the transmission/driveshaft area.
The dealer said this is normal even though it doesn't happen every time.
But the noise it makes DOES NOT sound normal.
Anyone have any info???
Thanks

Just to clarify...  you'd come to a stop in 'D'rive, foot on brake, shift
into 'P'ark, THEN hear the clunk?

If so, you're probably just hearing the park pawl engaging...  it's a
spring-loaded rod, so if the alignment is just "slightly" off (ie. not
perfectly aligned, and not so mis-aligned that the pawl won't engage, until
the vehicle rolls a bit), then it will "clunk" as it engages.

Are we talking "boot kicking a tire" type of clunk, or more of a "sledge
hammer striking the frame"  kind of noise?

You should NOT hear a clunk going into park.
UNDER ANY CIRCIMSTANCE if that truck is a standard pickup.

And.....
I don't care what Tom says.

fact.....not fiction.

Except of course, if the truck actually has the required backlash in the
gears. If it has that, it'll have a clunk when it goes into park at some
point or another. There has to be a small amount of play in the drivetrain,
I don't care what MM says.

Max,
you are wrong.  I am right.

Listen......I work on these things EVERY single day of the week........
okay,okay,.....i don't work on weekends...but......

regardless of that.....
I am test driving, scanning, repairing these things day in and day out,
most every day of the week.....and these POS trannies, from vehical
to vehical, are not clunking, should not clunk, will not clunk, going
into
park if the tranny is working properly and the eng perf. is up to par.

This thing should NOT clunk going into PARK!!!!!

now....
you keep spouting whatever you want...
but....

you're wrong.

If you want to state that you work on trannies everyday of the week,
have done so for 20 years or so......
then....
we'll debate who's wrong and who's correct.
AND.....then you'll still be wrong.

You guys keep posting on experience from personal use of your vehicals,
history of what you've read, archives of this NG, and what you've
convinced
yourselves is correct.
That's all well and good.  Ya'll hit the nail on the head most of
the time.
But....when GG or some other tranny dude pops in here you reeeeelllly
oughta do some research before you go spouting guess's based on
what you've read or heard.  I know you guys like a good feud....

so......

GO SUCK A MONKEY'S ARSE.............
u-r  wrong!
i-m right.

That would be "vehicle", but who's got spell check these days?

Right, but the question was about the drivetrain, not just the trans. Take a
look at the subject line....

> This thing should NOT clunk going into PARK!!!!!

Well I know you are wrong, because my Dad's 75 D100 did it, my '00 Ram does
it on occassion, my Darts all do it once in a while, and its not exactly
rocket science to figure out that there HAS to be a bit of play in the
drivetrain in order to avoid friction problems.

Yeah, and you know everything... except what Tom and I ask for. BTW, wheres
that TSB you promised?

Perhaps thats why you think you know it all. Except the short term stuff...
like that TSB.....

You know I am wrong based on what I stated you used as a basis
for your input.......experience with your own vehicows.

maybe you should fix yours.....before you tell others theirs works
correctly.

and......
the tsb was emailed to a reg here.........
the "harness" link was emailed to another reg here.

(didn't want all the info going to someone that could put it togeather
and build a bomb)

man........
i make me chuckle.

Or maybe I should leave the backlash at the factory spec.

Park should not clunk so loud you think it's coming from the tranny,
reverse can, sitting on reverse for a split second to long and jaming
it into park like a bat out of hell can clunk.  Otherwise drive another
Dodge at the dealership, shift the crazy way you do now and see it if
makes the same clunk?  Then you will know if the dealer is being
straight with you.
