wheel interchangeability

Will the 17" wheels & tires from the newer 2500's physically fit and work
ok on a '97 2500?

Not a problem... unlike Ford, Dodge has never changed their bolt pattern.

Wouldn't you have to go for a low profile tire to compensate?? Or will they
work without having to change something in the speedometer.???

The stock tire/wheel combinations are close enough in overall diameter to
each other that it won't matter.
