I have a 96 ram 1500 4x4 shortbed, and i'm looking to buy a used cap. Will

Years ago I had a 95 Ram, and I put a cap on it. IIRC, the dimensions of the bed
were prtetty standard. Caps for Ford and Chevy of the same bed length would fit.
BUT, the Dodge has a curve to the tailgate, it's not straight across like Ford and
Chevy. The back of the cap had to be redesigned to fit the tailgate. That's what
all the salesman at multiple dealers told me when I asked why the Dodge cap was more
expensive.

The only thing I can offer you is this:

I saw this site the other day. You'll notice near the top that they
show the '92 Dodge version of their LSII-model cap will fit a 73-87
Chevy/GMC "SW" bed. I assume "LB" is Long Bed, and "SS" is Step Side,
so "SW" probably means short bed - though I don't know what the W is
for.

Short Wheelbase used to be the way they were described until extended cabs
started outnumbering regular cabs so you started having a short bed on a
longer wheelbase, but thats where the SW came from.

I thought about "Short Wheelbase", but I rejected it for that very
reason - that bed size isn't tied too tightly to wheelbase. Thanks for
the historical perspective; it makes sense now.
