When I get my a.s to FL I'm going to need a 'putor for the house. I want to
leave this one here in MA for Sue to use and the time's when I come up. I
don't do a bunch of gaming but I might. I do a lot of reading on the net. I
like a BIG monitor for all the pink bunny pic's. I thought about a laptop
even more when I was trying to figure out the navigation question but have
pretty much settled on a garmin. Thanks to all for your help and info on
that. Anyway a laptop will limit the size of the monitor.
So let's hear what ya think especially you folks in the field. Brand, reason
why and price they go for if ya have the info.

My honest thoughts are build it yourself vice buying one. You will be able
to get exactly what you want with out the headaches of "customizing" a brand
name 'puter. Hell, I'd build it for you if you want.
Outside of that, if you can wait a bit, hold tight until we see how the AMD
buy-out of ATI turns out. I say this because over the years on-board audio
has improved leaps and bounds. With this buy-out, I expect to see on-board
video to do the same. This can say you some money if you build.
For a brand name, I would have to say Dell or Gateway. They provided the
best over all c/s when ever we needed to deal with a warranty issue.
Just make sure you use it in your Ram! Had to make sure we talked about
dodge trucks, ya know.

I agree 100% on building your own. Last Dell I bought it had more
issues than any of my ex's ever had (VBG). I built this one I'm on
and I have to say I am more pleased with this than any computer I've
owned in the last 15 years. If you'd like the specifics of all that I
built into it, just let me know. It's an Intel 64 bit and is insanely fast.
And never ever in the last year since I built it have I ever had any
problems.

I've been a working as an electronics technician for over 30 years. I
have worked on hundreds of PCs.
Get a name brand with a warranty.
Personally I can't stand laptops. The keyboard is to small for my hands
and the "mouse" pad is a pain to use. You can't use a laptop on your lap
because it will overheat.
What ever you do don't try to build one your self. Unless you want to
provide some job security for electronics technicians like me.

Check ebay. Go to the computer section, enter the processor brand and speed
you want and you'll have quite a selection. Most will offer upgrade, so it's
just like building your own but it'll come to you fully assembled and burned
in.

You can plug any size monitor you want in the back of the Laptop. You don't
have to use the LCD when your at home or the office.

That's is very true Roy, if you really wanted the laptop for the navigation
use, you should be able to get the optional docking station for the laptop
you buy. That would allow you to use a standard keyboard, mouse setup, and
give to the ability to use a conventional monitor or even TV unit if you
have one that has DMI or VGA inputs.

You don't need the docking station, you can plug all of that and more
directly into the back or sides of laptop.

True, but there are advantages to a dock, like now having to plug/unplug
everything if he needs to or when he uses the laptop in his Ram. Either
way, a laptop can be used for your needs.

Oh sure, I have three docks myself. I was just saying he didn't need a dock

A real smart a.s you are today!<VBG> Ya filling in for wide ride?
The info is cool but I'm really leaning away from the laptop. Also want a
warranty, don't have or want to acquire the talent to build one. If I'm in
FL I want to pick the phone and say it don't work come and get it or where
do I send it.

Ok, so that puts us back at square one. Dell, ateway or I build it for you.
I will warranty my work, as I do with the others I have built. Funny enough
though, none of them have come back with any problems, so who needs a
stinking warranty.

Usually just a lurker here, but I'll stick my nose in here. CompUsa has an
Acer Laptop 20" wide screen which is a beauty, my new HP 17" wide screen is
great. I configured it and ordered it from the HP store. After I configured
what I wanted, I called to order by phone and got another $100 off. Used to
build my own computers, but for me, just not worth it anymore. Any way, have
fun shopping and comparing.

It's a Panasonic. It's an LCD Projection TV. Outstanding picture in all
formats. All forms of video inputs. HDTV, all that. Damn thing even has a
SD card slot on the front.

Just my take on them and I am no way up on the tech end of them. I looked
around for months comparing picture's for a tv in the family room. Looked at
plasma, lcd all of them. Finally went with a Samsung 61" DLP Imo the picture
is as good as the plasma and the rest. One thing to note. After 2 years of
fairly heavy use the over heat light came on and it shut down. I reset it
and it happened a few day's again later. The original warranty was gone but
Sue had bought the extended in home deal. It cost $1,500 in parts to get it
right, ext.warranty covered it. I guess there is a place for extended
warranties.

If you don't mind ordering from an online source, you can save some coin at

I've purchased stuff from both and haven't been disappointed *yet*.

Nan's oldest was a star with Gateway CS.. really funny, because 6 months before
that, and a year after he left that job, he didn't know sh.t about computers..
They have a series of stock replies and are rated by how many calls they can
handle, with emphasis on blaming the software and OP and shuffling folks off the

You're obviously suffering from laptop avoidance, bro...
I use a 21" flat panel monitor on my laptop when it's not mobile...
For a desktop model, check out E-machines... If you can use a "standard"
package, they're a LOT of computer for the money..

I've had Gateway for years but the 2 Dell machines that nan bought seem very

The problem with many of today's pre-built computers is the lack of service.
Unless you plan on doing some heavy hitting (gaming) with that machine, just
about any of the factory brands will do just fine, even the lower cost ones.
I would check into what service they do provide as some will actually charge
you for premium service. Personally, I build my own and believe it or not,
it is pretty damn easy. The advantage of doing it that way is you get to
set the strengths and weaknesses yourself and if you use quality name brand
components that have existed for a few months, it should set up easily and
run without problems. Also building it yourself and setting up the software
does give you some insight when something doesn't work right as to where to
look and you will probably save money as well. Just something for you to
think about.

I used to play the build/upgrade game for myself and my clients... then the
systems got so inexpensive that it wasn't worth it..
In "the day", you bought a $2,000 system and upgraded it several times...
Now, you buy a complete system for $600 and give it to the grand kids or someone
when you buy a new one.. not worth the cost of upgrading any more, IMO.

If you can build one yourself then do so. I'll even build you one if
you'd like. Free of charge. Just buy the parts and pay for shipping.
Buying a name brand is almost as cheap now but if you ever want to
upgrade a component (video card, memory, etc) the name brands sometimes
make it hard to do so. Your needs may change and it's nice to be able to
upgrade a part of the computer trouble free.
