In light of the sh.t going on in the world today.
Does this country need to bring back the draft?? Yes or no and why.
Roy
Not enough people signing up on the voluntary military system, not enough
soldiers, sailors or bases in reserve thanks to the liberals, military
personnel doing extended tours because the military is understaffed, and
many are re-enlisting past their 20 year retirement because of the
understaffing . .
You do the math.

Math
Fiscal 2006 Enlisted Recruiting from Oct 1, 2005 to Aug 31, 2006;
Active Duty 102% of goals
R and NG 97% of goals
"For August, Army National Guard retention was above 119 percent of the
cumulative goal of 31,599, and Air National Guard retention was 110 percent
of its cumulative goal of 9,236. Both the Army and Air Guard are currently
at 98 and 99 percent of their end strength, respectively. Losses in all
reserve components for July are well within acceptable limits. The Navy
Reserve presents a concern with its increasing attrition rates. Indications
are that these trends will continue into August."

And 20 years in the Military is not an age for mandatory retirement but
rather a time where you 'can' retire. Those who want to put in more years
for a higher retirement income (or for any of a host of reasons), may, just
like those of us in private industry who 'can' retire at 59 1/2 but choose
rather to stay and work.

Reserves units are not active duty personnel and cannot be included. just
like Vietnam, some people are going reserve to avoid a potential draft and
to avoid ducking bullets.
Current goals are not high enough to replace the manpower lost during the
Clinton Fiasco.
Most of the service men I knew during the years I was in the National Guard
did not want to remain military for another 25 years. Azwiley would be a
good one to reply to this point, as would my son, who served in Iraqi
Freedom.

When the need arises, sure. Currently, there are enough volunteers to fill
the need. So, no.
On the other hand, if you mean bring back the draft and have every able
bodied 18 y/o fulfill a 2 year commitment to the Military, wow, what a can
of worms. Two cans; the anti-draft can and the anti-tax can. Can you
imagin the cost of supporting 99% of 18 and 19 year old Americans? So,
would need more info and think this one out.

On the flip side...I think the majority of under 25 year olds
"need" the military for at least 2 years. Too many of these
punk kids think they have the world by the tail. A stint in the
military might give them a little more respect for everyone.

Actually, it's their parents that need a kick in the a.s. The kids got
the attitude from them...

I agree...sorta. I think both need a swift kick.

Y E S !!!!
My pet peeve for years is kids have too little direction in life since they
dropped the draft...
MY version is a bit different, though.... I think that everyone, male & female,
should be "drafted" for at least 2 years of SOME type of service...
Make it military, peace corps, teaching kids in poor areas, picking up trash,
etc... anything that will give them a sense of "real life" and aid the US in
some way...
Then, whether they were in the Army or tutoring poor kids or whatever, they'd be
eligible for scholarship help to continue their education..
In my experience, (one of the few perks of being OLD), folks that were in the
service or did some other job that required responsibility and giving do much
better in college and life in general, because they've had a look at the bad
side and don't want to be there... YMWV
Thanks for the soap box, bro....

When I went to Ft. Leonard Wood in January 1970, I was a little older than
most of the recruits at 22.
Even then, the guys that had the least trouble with the D.I.'s were those
raised with a strong work ethic. They already knew that "orders" were not
"suggestions".
When my eldest went to Navy Basic in Chicago 7 years ago, he knew the
difference between orders and suggestions also and they made him an acting
squad leader for it.
He said it made Basic almost easy for him.

100% correct imo!! I see these new kids we hire at work and I get better
response from the wife's dog. You try to explain something anything and you
are greeted with a blank stare. These kid's don't know how to learn. They
have been handled gently all tthrough their lives and now don't feel they
have to do a damn thing. While I'm at it I'm so sick of hearing the friggin'
race card played everytrime a person of color is told to do his damn job.

Yup, it has to be revamped for sure but no more educational deferments.
Everybody get's to play.

Most definately! Look back at Nam, many a boy got through college just to be
defered from the draft.
A couple of years of service for ones country for both men and women wouldn't be
a bad idea as well.

That reminds me of something a friend told us when our son was considering going
into the Army, BK...
He's retired Navy/Coast Guard and his little pearl of wisdom was that "If a kid
has no real plans for college or career, the military is an excellent finishing
school"
