97 Dodge info needed.

Leon Taylor - 22 Oct 2006 08:38 GMT I just bought a 97 Dodge Dakota Sport (146,000 miles) with a V-6 engine and 4 speed auto trans . I am wanting info on getting more power from the engine .I know a upgrade in the exhaust and intake air would be a good place to start but if any one has any suggestions where to go after that I would value your info. Also I would like to know if these trucks in /around the same year model have any common problems. Thank you.
Budd Cochran - 22 Oct 2006 15:44 GMT You get a 239 cubic inch V-6 in a 4000+ pound vehicle and you want it to do 0-60 in less than a heartbeat . . . easy, fill the back end with nitroglycerine and slam the liftgate.
I find myself wondering which is the more stupid, you for buying an underpowered (for your needs, apparently) vehicle, or me for wanting to ask you "what the heck were you thinking?" for not considering it could be underpowered for what you need it to do.
You might look for a better computer chip, a some kind of supercharger ( there was one advertised in the group the other day), or a vehicle with the engine you really need in it.

These Cummins have gobs of room for horsepower increases. I believe with the smarty program you can pick up in the area of 60 additional horsepower.

I'm sorry, I didn't know you were my nanny this week. Gosh, I'd sure like it if mum to let me know these things. Oh, dear, she can't. She passed away in 81.

Obviously you have not been in this group for very long or you would know there are an average of about 8 of these "I-bought-a-V-6-and-I-want it-to-run-like-a-Viper-or-a-Peterbuilt" posts per year, if not more.
I'm sorry if you can't understand how it gets tiresome listening to these whiners about how they didn't use their God given brains to figure out that a V-6 isn't going to tow that 50 foot fifth wheel over (Colorado's Monarch Pass ( over 11,000 feet) or turn the quarter mile faster than a AA/FD, or get better gas mileage than a 50 cc Moped.
Or worse; how they think a K$N airfilter with a Tornado device in the (carb / throttle body) and magnets on the fuel lines will cause all those things to magically happen.
Now, killfile me and go bother someone else.

Respectfully, I advise that you not bother trying to reason with Budd (Bible Nazi) about *anything*. The result is always the same:
1) He's the rode-hard victim doing god's will. 2) You are a liberal or an atheist or both.
Also, I suggest no trying to reason with *anyone* about staying on topic. It's a foreign concept around here and will only result in you getting flamed by the self appointed owners of this ng.

If his engine has been properly maintained, operated intelligently, then a good rebuild will set it right up for his performance increases. BTDT. My son's driving a 79 318 with mild mods and 400,000 miles on that I built and gets 25 mpg out of it in a D-150.
If not, then he'll get your results.

9DodgeFan - 24 Oct 2006 01:10 GMT I'm sorry some of the people here have to be so rude and immature and complain so much, rather than trying to help people. You will not be able to get much more power out of the engine without spending gobs of money (supercharger, hyperchip, etc.). Intake/exhaust mods would give a power increase, but it probably wouldn't even be noticeable. Also, if you're going to be towing decent sized things, you may want to upgrade the rear suspension with helper springs or air bags to eliminate "tail sag" which happens a lot in weighed down Dakotas. Being a Ram owner, I don't know of typical Dakota problems, but this site has some recalls that could give you a good idea of common problems: http://www.internetautoguide.com/auto-recalls/67-int/1997/dodge/dakota/base/inde x.html

Budd Cochran - 24 Oct 2006 12:26 GMT I'm sorry you're not educated enough to have read a little farther in the reply ( gotta love the un-education by liberal public school systems) and thereby read the advice I gave on possible performance enhancing products.
You might see if a Christian school offers remedial reading courses in your area.

Sorry but the problem with your reply is that nobody will bother to pay any attention to it as you have already proved yourself to be out of your mind with your previous rants. It's sort of like the little boy that cried wolf.

I enjoy how your broken-down a.s still can't spew anything useful.
Still too poor/stupid to buy a proper vehicle to tow 15k across the rockies with?

And, exactly what did you supply that was useful to anyone except you and your ego?
> Still too poor/stupid to buy a proper vehicle to tow 15k across the > rockies with? Still too bigoted and asinine to mind your own business, Suter? I mean, besides the fact the engine never missed a beat and only ran hot because of the transmission was in the wrong gear for the FIRST climb out of Denver, that little D-150 made an awful lot of "tow" rigs look pretty bad. It took a Cummins hauling a lighter load to pass me with any ease.

Bye!

Didn't you notice the truley christian attitude of the post?

I've got a '98, same engine transmission, little less mileage.
Don't think any of the heavily advirtized HP enhancers will give you any noticeable change.
As for common problems, my truck has been relatively trouble free. The CatCon is subject to core material dislocation, and you're already past the extended warranty mileage on that, I suspect it may have already been replaced. I had an early water pump failure, replaced under warranty. Also had a differential speed sensor failure and have had ongoing and irritating, but not truck out of service, intermittant problems with that. The brakes develop shudder early and often, many forums devoted to that topic, I suggest high quality pads and careful wheel lug torquing. I'm a believer in ceramics, but have not found any for this truck.

sqdancerLynn - 27 Oct 2006 08:30 GMT If you want more preformance CHANGE the rear diff gears to 4.10 or something steeper depending on what tires you have. Ater driving a Dodge van with 360 carbed motor for manny years & my last van a 92 3/4 van that really sucked gas 8 mpg. I DID NOT want a front wheel drive van settled for a 1/2T shorty conversion with 3.9 It's perfect for my use

Thank >you. yes these trucks also have transmission problems. i know because i have one right now sitting in my front yard and the transmission is gone out. i am having a very hard time finding someone to rebuilt it or even finding a transmission for my truck . i can not even find one at a reasonable price. that is what i think about these trucks. also after time the heater will go out and you will have to replace the heater coil . mine has been replaced about twice so far and needs to be done again. and i am just the second owner.
