Dead Batteries

Hi All!

Having trouble with my 99 CTD Sport Quad Cab.  Batteries went dead while
truck was stored over the winter.  I replaced both batteries about 2 weeks
ago.  Started the truck on different days over the period of the first week
with no problems.  Parked the truck in the driveway and after about 1 week
both new batteries are dead.  Seems to be something drawing a small amount
of power continuously.  Anyone else had to deal with this particular
problem?

TIA

Fred

Do you have anything aftermarket that has been installed?  CB, Amp,
Aux lights, etc?  If not, skip next line.
If you do, I would start checking those first.  Disconnect the power
wire, pull the fuse etc and see if the problem goes away.  If not, it
is something to do with the OE wiring.  Check for an open relay, etc.

He'll probably find several. Relays are supposed to be open when
something isn't turned on, punkin.

If you plan on storing the truck for some period of time, pull the IOD
(ignition off draw) fuse in the fuse panel.  It's the one with the plastic
shroud around it (as it's intended to be pulled out for storage purposes).
If this is going to be a regular thing, consider a battery tender.

If you suspect a problem beyond the normal IOD current, hook a multimeter
capable of measuring up to 10A of 12VDC (most multimeters can do this - they
have a separate positive terminal to hook the probe to) inline between the
battery and the +12V cable.  Read the current draw, and pull each fuse
individually while observing the current draw.  This will tell you which
circuit is drawing the current.

Good info ... thanks guys.  Is the IOD fuse in the dash panel fuse block or
the under  hood fuse panel?

Dash panel - it's the only one with a plastic shroud around it, to make it
easier to pull out.

Hi Again...

Tom ... would you know what the "typical" IOD draw might be?

Thanks again

Less than an amp, as long as the dome light is off.  Make sure the door is
closed, or at least the pin switch depressed, when you're testing it.

Thanks very much Tom ... will check it out ... really appreciate your help.

Best regards
