New 2007 2500 SLT

I have had three Dodge trucks so far, a 92 Dakota, a 02 RAM and a 04 RAM,
none with diesel.

Loved them all, but now we went a bought a bigger trailer so my wife and I
just bought a new 07 RAM SLT quad cab 2500 with the 5.9 Cummins diesel
tonight and will pick it up on Tuesday.

Now before I get flamed silly, I have read, searched and hunted a pile of
newsgroups, Goolge etc and cannot find consistant answers to the simplist
questions for a new diesel owner. No manual yet either. So this is why I am
asking the group.

1) what is a break in period before I can tow the trailer. It is a 7200 lb
travel trailer.I was told right away by the dealer and after 5000 kilometers
by my neighbour who has an 05 mega cab 3500.

2) when should I change the original oil?

3) I have been told three answers to this question, how many miles
(Kilometers) between regular oil changes should I expect? one guy said
12,000 kilomters (7000 miles), another said 10,000 kilomters (6000 miles)
and another said every 5,000 kilomters.(3,000 miles). I am used to changing
the 04 Hemi every 5000 kilometers.

4) Can you really run any of the diesel fuels in the 07 5.9 Cummins or must
I only use the Ultra Low Sulphur fuel.

any other special things to watch out for?

I promise I will read the manual when I get it, but I just want some real
world opinions. I know these sound pretty simple to most of you, but

thanks

I gave mine 7,500 to get seated.

> 2) when should I change the original oil?

7,500 miles oil change interval.  Factory filter is going to be tight,
tight, tight and then half a turn.  Use Fleetguard or good filters, and not
stuff you get at Checker.

> 3) I have been told three answers to this question, how many miles

No expect.  Change it every 7,500 miles, and your truck will last longer.

> 4) Can you really run any of the diesel fuels in the 07 5.9 Cummins or

The new '07s are required to run on ULS, and will damage if run with regular
diesel.  Not so with '06es.  They will run with either.  For about four
months now, ULS is all I have seen at the pumps, so the old stuff is
apparently being phased out fast.  BUT WATCH THE PUMP LABEL AND DON'T PUT
THAT OLD STUFF IN THERE, OR YOU COULD HAVE PROBLEMS IF YOU GET ANY OF THE
OLD STUFF.  I don't know what the cut off date for selling ONLY ULS.

> any other special things to watch out for?

Just watch the engine while it's breaking in.  Oil leaks, driveway spotting,
usual stuff.  Keep an eye on the oil level.  Air filter is easy to check.
Drain the water from your fuel filter, especially if you live in a humid
area.  (in the manual, real easy)

Oh, one more thing.  There's lots of helpful info in that little book in the
glove box.

tow with her right away without fear...its a Cummins she's happiest
loaded.

i done my first at 6000 you could wait till 7500 if ya wanted.

the regular service interval for the Cummins is 7500 miles.

ulsd is required by law on highway service vehicles in the U.S.

> any other special things to watch out for?

Keep your oil changed (every 7500 and fuel filters every 15,000) yer good
to go.

IIRC, about 500 miles is the most 'easy' driving you should do, and that is
if you fear doing what Chris just suggested.  If you break in your CTD while
loaded (under load, not drunk), it will seat everything quicker and better.
Drive it like you stole it.

As far as ULSD, I know it is supposed to be used in the 6.7 but the last
5.9s could take either. Tom or Mike may come on and say for sure.

Filter changes: make Geno's your friend.

Yeah, watch for slow traffic while going uphill.

I'd go 250 miles just to get things started. Then load the hell out of the
truck, pull a couple of cars and a boat all at the same time if you are so
inclined. Loading helps seat the rings. If you don't load the engine, it'll
take years to fully break it in.

No, I'm not exaggerating.

Hook up the trailer and go.  just keep an eye on your fluids and temps
and you'll be ok. the electronics that control the engine will take
care of business if there's a problem.

>2) when should I change the original oil?

I maintain a nationwide fleet of trucks.. an engine like yours would
see its first oil change in the 6000-8000 mile range. most new trucks
will hit the road and not be seen again until their next pm service. I
doubt very much the people who rent/lease any of these trucks are
concerned about the actual breakin.. they just load them up and run
the bag out of them.

6000-8000 miles. large fleets go around 10000-15000.

in the states all you're going to get is low sulfur unless your buy
fuel that's for off road use. More than likely you won't find it at a
fuel station. the engine in your truck was designed to work with the
low sulfur fuel.

It's hard to find low sulpher diesel fuel in the Atlanta area. They started
switching over to ultra low sulpher about 6 months ago.
One concern of mine is for the guys that must use ULSD. What happens when a
station switches over from LSD (the fuel, not the drug) to ULSD? Do they
empty the storage tank completely before getting a ULSD shipment? Can they
dump 500 gallons of ULSD into a 250,000 gallon tank half full of LSD and
sell it as ULSD? How does the customer know for sure? If something like that
happens and it causes engine damage, how can the customer prove which
station he bought the mislabled tank of fuel from? My '99 CTD is giving me a
bit of trouble right now but I won't even consider replacing it with a new
one for a few more years.

Something tells me that they have to pump the old stuff out first.

UPDATE
thanks everyone. I have read the manual front to back and took in to account
what everyone said. We drove it 800KM before we dropped the TT on it. We
then stuck to 80 KPH or 50 MPH the whole way to Banff and back this weekend.

What a blast ! This is the first time in 30 years of driving that road that
I never noticed the hills or steep grades. This thing just ran up the grades
and never even changed gears. We also used 1/2 the fuel of the 04 Hemi.

Dealer said that 7500 to 8000 KM will be when to change the first oil.

Turns out we only have ULSD in the Calgary area. Selling for .80 / litre at
the local Flying J. That is somewhwere around 3.03 / gallon US. Unleaded is
going for 4.58 / gallon.

What a beautiful area to break in the CTD.  We were there 2 years ago with
ours.  Yeah, driving it for the first trip is a blast.  It will continue.
Congrats on your successful trip.
