I just bought new shocks  for my 2004 3500 4x4 and started looking at them
and noticed it looks like you can only get to one side of the shock mount on
the bottom through a hole on the front side.so how do you hold the nut to
keep it from spinning? and then again how to hold when putting it back
together?

The nut has a flag on it, that prevents the nut from turning.  You can see
the end of it sticking down.  It's also long enough so that by holding on to
the end of the flag with your fingers, you can put the nut up into position
and get the bolt started into it.
