1996 Dodge Transmission - Progression of Bad Behavior - Recovery Plan?
|

Thread rating: |
Martin - 12 Aug 2008 18:53 GMT 1996 Dodge Maxi Van (3500 series, 1 ton, 15-passenger bus). 158,000 miles. 5.9 liter (360 CI) V-8, automatic.
For a few weeks, it was slow to shift out of first gear. You could let off on the accelerator, and encourage it to upshift, but it tended to stay in lower gear a little too long otherwise. Then it stopped shifting out of first at all.
Fluid wasn't really low, but I tried very slightly overfilling it and this cleared up the problem - temporarily. Next day, it once again wouldn't shift out of first. Then it stopped pulling in first gear, and now only has reverse. This progression (from sluggish to inoperable) occured over about a two-day period.
Pulled the pan and filter. It looked as if it had never been taken off. Lots of sludge stuck to magnet, total of about 1/4 teaspoon of aluminum filings recovered from pan. Maybe that's normal for 12 years and 160K miles, I don't know. This is my first auto transmission problem.
Friend advised me to clean it up good, replace filter, put in 1 qt of K&W Trans-X with clean fluid, and see what happens. Plan to do this on my day off.
Any comments or other ideas?
thanks,
Martin
Curmudgeon - 13 Aug 2008 02:57 GMT Try your friend's advice by all means....but have the phone number of a good transmission shop programmed into your cell phone, cause I think you're gonna need it! At 160,000 miles you've gotten your money's worth and a tranny rebuild is likely in the cards.

DDT - 13 Aug 2008 16:01 GMT I had those shifting symptons at 200000 mi and a lube of the downshift cable at the trans fixed my problem. Still shifting fine at 245,000! 97 but I think yours is beyond that fix. dakota 4x4 5.2.

Martin - 13 Aug 2008 17:04 GMT Don't have a service manual, but the owner's guide says to "perform a band adjustment" whenever the transmission fluid and filter are changed. Anyone have a procedure for this "band adjustment"?
thanks,
Martin

Martin - 14 Aug 2008 17:21 GMT Thanks Ken, I downloaded and saved it. Looks pretty simple.

Looks pretty simple. It's not complicated, by a long shot. But, depending on the specific vehicle, you may find working on the front band adjuster a little cramped (doing the adjustment on my '03 pickup was a breeze, compared to the '00 Durango I was just working on). A crow's foot is very handy for getting at the front adjuster locknut.
Martin - 14 Aug 2008 17:26 GMT Ok, I'm going to replace the filter and fluid this weekend, and adjust the bands. Is there anthing else I can service/clean without dropping the transmission?
For example, is there a way to drain the dirty fluid out of the torque converter, maybe a drain plug behind the inspection cover?
Can I remove the valve body (the stuff that gets modified/replaced when installing a "shift kit") and perhaps do some good by disassembling and cleaning it?
What else? I want to give myself the best possible chance of having a truck that moves forward when I put it back together and refill.
thanks,
Martin

Just hold this thought wide ride. In about 4 short months you'll be out there chasing friggin' snowflakes freezeing your fat a.s off. While I, on the other hand, will calmly be reaching into my cooler for another cold brew, while sprawled on the beach.
Regarding your "dead pecker" cheap shot You haven't been able to see yours for soooo damn long, you don't know whether you have one or not!

So now we have the old hippy, the wide assed rabbit and the jet lagged cookie maker. I would think that between the three of ya, you would be able to come up with some decent cheap shots. But friggin' no!! All ya have is junk! You should be ashamed. We have standards here. Jeeezzze, I'm going to the beach for a bit. Please try to get it together.Maybe ya need more help. Or maybe I'll hold cue cards for ya. <GBMFG>

Hey, I got a quick question for ya. When you go to the beach, do you have to put some kind of feet or paddles on the bottom of the walker legs? I'd hate to see ya get stuck in the sand and have to call 911.. If you remembered your phone anyways...

But since I am heading for the beach for a bit of fishing before the storm messes the ocean up. I'll try to wave to your look alike relatives, if any swim by.
Gotta take a phone to the beach. sh.t happens too quick around here with rip current's, shark bites and other stuff.
While your sprawled on the couch tonight, you might want to watch the Pat's. Game is around 8PM I believe.

I watched the mechanic do my '95 4x4 and didn't "see" anything unusual, but he is the expert and not me. Mine was done at 170,000 miles the first time after a lot of heavy towing and hard driving. He did the "shift kit" and it sure makes it shift stronger and seems not to shift up and down quite so often on medium grades. The "shift kit" actually comprised of enlarging one of the ports in the valve body for more quantity of flow and a remap of the computer (Mopar high performance). He didn't charge for it and said they do it on all the Dodges of that era. I caught mine before it self-destructed and it cost about 1,400 bucks.
