What kind of mpg do you get?

SteveB - 22 Sep 2008 04:55 GMT I have a 06 Dodge 2500 4wd short bed with Cummins turbo. My mpg was showing to be around 16 on the overhead display on a 200 mile trip. On the return, gaining 1700' elevation over the 200 miles, it dropped to 15.5 or so. Then I figured miles on odometer divided by gallons over a 1,000 trip, and a couple of fillups, and it comes out 14.5 or thereabouts. I think this I should be getting more. The engine has about 45,000 miles on it. We have intentionally cut it down to about 68 cruise control on the Interstate. We are running with the bed empty and not towing anything. Just carrying a couple of pieces of luggage and two people.
Thoughts?

"GeekBoy has not a clue about anything, and probably won't ever get one either". That clear?

Your eloquence is profound, as your post illustrates. It shows that you are an overeducated boor.
Look that up in your Funk and Wagnall's.

What I meant was that you have no idea how little that the information you were posting was valued by me. Or anyone else. It was worthless. In your other posts, I see a pattern of idiotic prattle, and not a lot to lead me to conclude that you are a mature experienced adult.
Did you get that Bunkie?

Now who does not have a clue?

In some areas of this country, correcting the other person's English will get you a can of good old fashioned redneck whoopass. But I'm sure you already know about that.
Did you get beat up at school a lot?
It helps to talk about these things.

As I see it, GB made an attempt at humor that wasn't appreciated... Now, I know that never happened to anyone else here, so lets start WWIII over it..
If you're going to spend your time pissing on feet in the shower, buy a good set of waders..

SteveB - 24 Sep 2008 01:47 GMT > Ok, boys... > [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > good set > of waders.. I asked a simple question about mileage, and geek boy could not comprehend it. It went from there. I thank the others who stated their opinion and experiences. Good information. Going on my second two tank monitoring. First tank, 14.2 @ 70mph Interstate with a little city driving inbetween. (399 mi/28.1 gal)

Steve Lusardi - 22 Sep 2008 06:23 GMT I see 18.2 average on my '04 dually, but freeway mileage is about 16 at 70. Steve

That type of driving, while not at all harmful, does extend your break-in period.
Also, what transmission, and what gears? Best fuel economy is usually realized at around 1800RPM or so. What are you turning on the highway?

I have the 4 speed OD tranny. No idea of the rear end gears, but not high ratio. Actually 95% of the driving has been light duty, with an occasional light trailer with no more than 1200# on it. I kind of figured it may need a little more running in.

Nosey - 22 Sep 2008 20:26 GMT > Best fuel economy is usually realized at around 1800RPM or so. My '99 will always get nearly 20 mpg highway no matter how slow or fast I drive it as long as I keep it under 2000 rpm (70 mph). If I run it over 2000 rpm the mileage drops off noticeably.

I have noticed that the mpg drops significantly when driving > 70 mph.
I do run a fuel additive that adds a bit of lubricant to the fuel (Premium Diesel). Supposedly that helps the mileage, but I really haven't seen a huge increase. I just use it to reduce wear and tear.

Fearless Fred - 30 Sep 2008 02:50 GMT 31 miles per Imperial gallon at 1500 RPM with my 99 CTD QC 2WD with 3:53 gears on flat ground.
