Is Chrysler forcing Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep dealers to merge?

Just got word from my dealer that they have been told they must buy out
the nearby Chrysler dealer or sell to them.  The two dealerships are
about 1 mile apart.  My dealer stated they don't have the cash to buy
the Chrysler/Jeep dealer out so they are selling.

Another Chrysler dealer I frequent is purchasing a Dodge dealership
across the street for the same reason.

Is Chrysler really forcing this consolidation of dealerships?

I'm hoping my Dodge dealers service manager finds work at another
Chrysler dealership so I can keep my business with them.  Only service
Dept. I've ever found that got things done right the 1st time with out
tons of arguing with them.

I can't see how they could force them to merge since most dealerships are
independent owners. Our local Lincoln-Mercury dealer is also the only Jeep
dealer in town.......wonder how that would work. Just Jeeps.......no other
Chrysler products.

Without reading the contract you can't say that... <g> Most dealership
contracts contain similar types of languages (buy the other guy out,
or let them buy you.)

If there is another DC dealer within a certain radius, I could see
them loosing their Jeep product line! (which would perhaps tick off a
bunch of customers!)

Very true..... I didn't think of that. It is probably true with older
dealerships though.

Yep, it probably would if, for no other reason other than their service is
impeccable. Looking for the nearest DC/Jeep dealership and it is about 15
miles away. I guess it could happen.

In my case the Dodge dealership has outstanding service.  Always gets
the job done without having to argue.  Often going out of their way and
doing extra things free of charge (wash, wax, etc.) as well as minor
repairs outside of warranty.  Unfortunately the nearby Chrysler/Jeep
dealer is larger and will be buying out the Dodge dealership next month.
My service manager as told me the entire department will be out of a
job at that time.  I can only hope the manager finds work at another
Chrysler or Dodge dealership I can go to.  The owner may build a new
dealership elsewhere.

Yea, that really sucks. I really haven't had any dealer work done on my
truck in a lot of years, so I don't know much about our local dealer shops.

I went into the further away Chrysler/Dodge dealer, one about 20 miles
from where I got my truck. (Won't go back there, they are a bunch of
jerks).

Left the truck with the service guys, went to the showroom.

Walk on to the floor, and the sales manager runs up and pumps my hand:
"Mr. ... How are you?" "Remember, I sold you that 2500 at the other
dealership? Well, I left and have come over here now."

I mentioned I'd never go back to that old dealership, and he promptly
walked me back to the service department, and told the service
manager: "I sold him his truck, if there are any problems, let me know
ASAP!"

I left happy. I may be getting it back this weekend (some front-end
work, which will take a few days.)

Dealer consolidation is not uncommon. It helps reduce DC's operating
costs...

The sad thing is that what usually happens is that the dealer you
don't like ends up being the surviving dealer! Ouch...

Sadly I'm probalby not going to buy another DC vehicle. Why? Because
the local dealer has gone downhill in the last three years to the
point where I won't remotely consider going back to them for
*anything*. They when from a five start quality dealer to a *NO* star
stick it to the customer place.

That's old news, Chrysler is trying to downsize along with other
manufactures. The dealers that just have one franchise such as Chrysler Or
Dodge only may soon be a thing of the past. It saves Chrysler form having to
pay the Reps to go from dealer to dealer, it saves paper work and the DDS
parts truck from dealer to dealer. In my state they are going belly up like
crazy. I worked at A Chrysler only dealer for the past 9 years and quit 4
months ago to come to a larger dealer. Word is that the Chrysler Dealer will
be shutting down because they are not big enough or have the space to take
on the jeep dealer down the street. The Jeep dealer down the street is a
larger facility and will be able to take Chrysler. Good luck
