As weird as this question is going to sound, I have to ask just the
same as it's quite important.

"How FAR can a 2005 Durango travel with NO OIL in the Transfer Case ?
I asked a local mechanic and he said it wouldn't go very far at all
with out starting to make horrible noises and eventually it would
start to bind as the bearings / chain ? would quickly heat up....
Could anyone comment ?

Much appreciated,

/FC....

It's very difficult to say exactly how far you could go. I'd only expect it
to get you about half way back to the Jiffy-Lube that left the drain plug
out.

Ahahahahah...

Well, that wasn't the case and there is NO leak either !  Someone's
lying to me... (Ahemmm, Dodge Dealer)  My Wife and I were able to
drive 1800 Km's before the thing started making noise....so, I think
the 'person' who told me it was "BONE DRY" (Dodge Dealer) is full of
CRAP !  The vehicle IS under warranty and I'm the third owner...  They
just don't want to fess up that it was 'mechanical failure' and are
doing what they can to make sure it has no warranty.  There's more to
this story (hence the reason I know it's the Dealer in the wrong..)
but I won't bore you people with it here......

Cheers,

/FC...

It's been a bit slow here lately and we all enjoy a good story. There are
some dealer service techs and a service manager that checks in here once in
a while. They won't pull any punches with you and can probably give you some
good advice. What happened?

General rule of thumb for chain driven transfer cases is that if they
have been driven at all (any distance) without oil, they should be
rebuilt/replaced.

Since it would be impossible (as I see it) to not drive without oil,
I'd say your best bet is to assume it is terminally damaged, and start
considering a rebuild, before it fails completely.

Note: most chain driven transfer cases, when the chain breaks or
stretches enough to jump teeth, self destruct completely as there is
insufficient clearance between the chain, gears, sprokets and the
case.

No your question is not weird! <g> I've seen transfer cases drain
themselves from time to time... One case (used in Hummer H1s) is well
known for loosing a small rubber plug (which is well above the oil
level!) and then draining themselves. The owner, unless they park in a
garage where they see the oil dripping, never know until it breaks.

Don't think anyone can state an exact so many miles.  Years ago I had a
manual transmission rebuilt at a shop.  They forgot to fill it with oil
when done.  Drove about 80 miles on the highway when all of a sudden the
rear wheels locked solid.  Got it home and opened it up and the gears
had literally melted together.

I'd say fill it up and see how it goes.  Odds are if it were driven more
than a very short distance it will need rebuilding.

I was once driving a Chevy S10 Blazer some years ago at highways speeds. It
had Castrol in it.
All of a sudden I lost power and could go no faster than 55. No warning
lights or nothing indicating a problem.

I got home to check out everything on the vehicle. Turned out all the oil
had drained out somehow, and there was none in the drain pan.

While the engine still ran..it needed to be replaced.

About 5 years ago my wife pulled up in our '93 S-10 Blazer sounding like
a diesel truck.
What's the "Check Guages" light for? she asked.
The oil had drained through a leak in the filter lines. Don't know how
long she drove after it all got out. Filled it up & fixed the leak.
Many K miles later it's still running fine; one reason I bought another
S-10 a few years back.

Well, since the 4 cylinder didn't have a remote oil filter...

Well. I wouldn't have known that..never had one.

Had the same problem in our kids Blazer... Talk about dumb engineering..
On the 4x4 models with the V-6, there isn't enough clearance for the oil filter
around the transfer case, so they moved it to the top of the fender, inside the
hood..
Almost everyone I've talked to that had this system had problems with either the
adapter plate, the hoses the O-rings, or all of the above..
You'd think that after all these years, even Chevy would have changed that
design..
