1993 B250 Conversion Van

Just purchased a 93 Ram 250 Conversion van. 318 Engine, 105K miles.
Two issues I see with it.

First, the engine runs great, plenty of power. Trans shifts perfeclty
smooth, but when it shifts up into OD, the van shakes, almost like it's
missing on multiple cylinders. Press on the pedal to downshift, or turn off
the OD with the "OD Off" switch, no shake at all.
Seeing how the trans shifts through all the gears, no slip etc... I don't
think, at least I hope, it's not a major trans issue.
Any thoughts?

Second issue, actually a minor inconvenience. At idle, the power steering
seems to not be fully operational. Wheel seems really stiff to turn, almost
like the belt were slipping. No grinding noise from the pump, no out of the
ordinary strain on the motor, plenty of fluid in the pump and no squealing
belt. Steering is fine as long as you are moving, even just a little.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

As far as tranny. Remember this is a dodge. Keep your fingers crossed.
Power Steering fluid may need to be changed out.

I've got a 92 that had a trans problem straight from the factory which
turned into a major vibration similiar to yours. There is a bushing at the
output of the trans. It is a press fit, and has a tendancy to slip out
allowing the output shaft to wobble. After the oil seal wears out, there is
nothing to cushion that shaft. You should check how much side to side play
the shaft has.

Thanks.
I actually drove it a bit today with the cowling off...
I believe it may be an engine miss under heavy load.
I found that at a stop, with my foot on the brake and stepping on the gas, I
can duplicate the shake.
Ran a compression test today and it's not TOO bad. One cylinder at 130, one
at 140 and the rest at 150.
The two low ones did come up with additional cranking.
I'm going to look at the fuel injectors tomorrow.
Read on Allpar forums about issues folks have with distributors going bad.
Tested that today as well.
I'll keep trying.

Fixed!!
The guy I bought it from had done a full tune up (cap rotor plugs and wires)
but installed the plug wires on the cap in the reverse order. Fixed that and
it runs smooth as silk.
Thanks for the tips.
As for the PS, I just had to get used to a steering system that didn't
include a rack and pinion. This is one of those "old fashioned" ones with
idler arm, center link, steering box etc.

I have a 94 B250 conversion van.  Check out the rear mounts of your
rear leaf springs.  My right side one is fine, the left one is all
rusted and collapsed !!!
Has anyone fixed one of these and if so where did you get the parts or
did you make the parts?

Sure beats puling the trans apart.

Nah...  pulling the trans apart is easy.  Pulling it out of the vehicle (not
to mention re-installing it) is the real bitch.

Wow....  so you only had two cylinders firing normally (1 and 6).  The rest
were either 180° or 360° out.  It's a wonder the thing ran at all.
