I've had to replace both the tie rod ends and the ball joints in the
last couple of years, on my 2001 Dakota - had around 40k miles. I think
there's a recall for one or the other though - the ball joints?

I'd love a recall on the 2500's ball joints. I'm going to have to
tackle that one really soon and don't really feel like doing it...

There was/is a recall on the Dakota ball joints,
only for the 4x4. Doesn't include the 2wd. Not
sure if it includes the Ram. I had mine replaced
under the recall at 75K miles or so, even though
they weren't bad .
Still have the original tie rods (inner and outer)
at 100K miles. I check them every time I rotate
the tires (5K miles).

My dakota is 4wd, but I haven't received a recall notice yet. Maybe they
will be smart and just replace them when they are doing the tie rod ends -
yeah right!! :)
Thanks for the info.

What do you look for when you check the tir rods?

Trick question? <g> Too much play in them mostly. There is a spec, but
most seasoned mechanics can generally tell quickly. Basically up on
the lift, lock steering, and move wheels (as if they were making a
turn) while watching the tie rods, and you should be able to determine
if the play is too much. Also, on vehices with one, check the
idler/pitman arms. (IFS vehicles).

Jack up the front end at the lower A arm. Grab
the tire at 3 and 9 o'clock. gently move the tire
back and forth. If the tie rods are bad, you'll
feel a slight clunk and a little slack. It won't
be much, just a little bit. You just have to
develope a feel for it.
Testing the ball joints is pretty much the same
thing, except you grab the tire at 12 and 6
o'clock.
