1998 Caravan strut mounts rusting

Hi,

I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan, and the strut mounts seemed to start
rusting real bad, virtually over the last few months. What are my
options? I hear from someone that Dodge makes some kind of sleeve,
that I assume you somehow put over the mounts to protect them from
further damage, but seems my right one especially may be beyond that
point? I aatched some Photobucket pics of the rust. Thanks much,

Dan

That didn't start in the last few months.

You have the left and right mixed up.

Get it fixed before the left side breaks thru and takes out the wiper
module and windshield.

No, this has been rusting for a long time... years of rust showing
there.

Limited, and expensive probably. As well, at least in some areas where
there are safety inspections, this vehicle would not pass.

Left is driver's side, right is passenger's side. Right/left is based
on sitting in the driver's seat, and the driver's right/left. Swapping
the two can be embarrasing.

You don't say how many miles on the car (or its general condition),
but it may not be worth fixing. I'm sure it could be fixed, but
probably not easily. The cost of a repair would likely exceed the
value of an old(er) van. Book value on this car is under $1000, so any
repairs should be carefully thought out, to ensure you are not
spending more than the car is worth fixing it...

Also, if there is that much rust in the strut towers, you can be 100%
sure there is more rust in other locations along the sub-frame, and
suspension mounts (in the rear, probably).

Some how I suspect based on what I've seen that isn't worth fixing.  My
farther 97 did the same thing and his went from a mild rust spot to similar
in about six months the problem is that salt and grime end up on top of the
strut and just eat every thing from the bottom up so it doesn't look bad
until it is to week to support the stress and then begins to disinigrate
rapidly.  Having looked at quite a few of these vintage vans its hit or miss
as to which ones have this issue

Thanks everyone for replying,

I'll have someone look at it Monday to see if it's worth saving -
probably not the way it sounds. Does anyone know of any recalls
regarding this issue? Thanks also for correcting me on the left/right
thing, does make sense now.

BTW, the van has about 128K miles. There are other rust spots starting
to show on the body. Cleveland winters are harsh, and they use a lot
of salt here.

Scrap it... Mileage is about max for that vehicle, rust showing on the
body, strut towers totally gone, you probably could get something for
parts if the engine/transmission are OK, try Craig's list (but, be
sure to indicate in any ad that it has terminal rust!)

There are no recalls.

Value and price are two different things.

Get an estimate for the repairs, compare that to what you could buy for
that amount of money, factor in the expectancy left on the drivetrain.
You may find that it makes sense to repair the van and run it another
80k miles.
