jmc - 15 Dec 2008 20:42 GMT Thinkin' about replacing the headlamps on my 2001 Dakota for something brighter - halogen?
Any suggestions?
Also, I haven't seen Mike S. here for a while - Mike, you still out there?

Put some FlameThrower lights on there for bright, override the switch on the high beams and fog lights, then drive around with all of them burning? In clear weather. In the daytime. If you need that much light to see, you need to have your eyes checked.

It's a legit question. I have no intention of doing the stupid things you suggest, as I'd like to actually survive my commute to work (narrow, twisty, two lane road) Sometimes the lights just go dim over time (gets a film?). Right now, the lights of whomever is behind me, shines underneath my truck and is brighter than my own headlights. Isn't a problem if there's someone in front, but on that narrow, twisty road, if I can't see far enough ahead to slow down for the deer, or the turn... you see my point, I hope.
Please, relax. You'll have a more harmonious outcome (cookies for the first person who can name the movie).

Well, no surprise, the mechanic lied, or is unaware his machine is broken - had the truck in to my TRUSTED mechanic (the other place is very conveniently located, only), and he said they were way off, and fixed 'em. So maybe I'll actually be able to *see* in the fog now.
They also replaced the PCV valve, and did a fuel service - lots of carbon on the throttle body - likely from that horrific Opal gas I was forced to use sometimes in Australia.
Truck runs noticeably better, so I trust both were legitimate repairs.

All I know is that we have E10 (Standard 93 RON ULP Plus 10% Ethylene) Standard ULP RON 93 Premium ULP -about 98 RON

They keep saying it won't hurt engines, but they finally had to admit it WILL hurt old engines (prior to 1976, and there's still quite a few of them on the road in the NT).
When I put Opal in my truck, I saw an immediate loss of power and at least a 3mpg loss of mileage (sorry, I never did learn to measure petrol efficiency the Australian way). I didn't realize it was the Opal at first, and was told by one station, when I described the truck's symptoms, that I'd need new sparks and a fuel service. A second station immediately asked if I was using Opal, and when I said I was, told me to simply stop using Opal and the problems would go away. I did, and they did.
But, sometimes I was forced to use it because premium petrol wasn't available, especially at outback roadhouses. Dunno if it was the Opal that caused a lot of carbon or if it was just time.
Oh, and Opal being non-sniffable? My trusted mechanic said that very quickly, they learned that you could put styrofoam in Opal, and it "become sniffable" - probably from the styro rather than the fuel, but still. And petrol sniffers also stepped up theft of petrol from vehicles, or simply purchased premium instead.

Little surprised you haven't heard about it, but NSW is a long way from the NT :)

Now I understand what you are talking about. The auto associations here are starting to say that putting E10 (10% ethlylene) fuel in the tank is wasting money as over any sort of long drive the cost savings soon fall behind the extra fuel used because of the lower energy output.
And, as you well know - long drives here are normal!!!

About the only solutions are to buff out the lenses or replace the assemblies. You could stick an arc lamp behind them but if the lens is cloudy it won't help.

As suggested here, if they were mine, I'd put in some halogen bulbs, and make sure that the cover lenses were not aged or pitted in a way that reduced the light. And I like to go out on a dark night with an adjustment screwdriver or torx, having located and identified the location of the adjustment screws in broad daylight, and adjust them to the way I like them. Because I've had it done professionally, and didn't like the way they were "supposed" to be. Of course, take a bottle of bubbly and your favorite assistant.

I really like 'em. Clear lens with faceted/focused reflector. Suggest you get 'em from someplace like O'Reilly's, rather than internet. That way if you have any problem, you have a place to return them. A number of internet vendors make it very hard if not impossible to return such items. Good Luck!
