I'm considering getting a 2008 Dakota given Chrysler's latest
specials, but was trying to do some research before considering
tangling with dealers.   some basic info seems hard to come by.

What's the lowest-end model that will tow at least 5,000 lbs?

Any model with a towing package.  Things that will
decrease towing weight are bigger cab, and 4wd;
since they add weight to the vehicle.

You can tow with a V6.  Just not very fast or very
quickly.

According to cars.com, any v8 will pull at least 5000 pounds.

Pulling is only one part of the equation.  Eventually you will need
to try and stop that weight.
