I have a 2001 Dakota V-6 4x4. Some days it runs fine, other days, not
so fine. OBD II says bad O2 sensor. I replaced the O2 sensor and
disconnected the battery to reset the engine light. It ran fine or
about 35 miles, then wouldn't make it up a short hill.

Any suggestions is appreciated.

Cat converter going bad and clogging up - accounts for both the check
engine light and the extreme loss of power.

Is there a test or some way of checking it out?

Yep, simple back pressure test. You need the proper gauge and remove the
O2 sensor and screw in the gauge adapter and start the engine. Then read
the gauge and compare it to the proper reading for that vehicle. Takes
about 20 minutes.
