My '97 Dodge Caravan has an annoying problem where the wipers will activate
once in awhile on their own. I've tried messing with the turn signal
indicator and knob that usually turns on the wipers looking for evidence of
a bad contact without luck. I cannot duplicate this problem on my own, but
it appears from time to time.
Does anyone have this same problem? What did you do to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Mine does the same thing. Maybe 1,2,3 swipes. May do it 2 days in a row,
then it may behave it's self for 6 months. It's always a suprise, but at
135000 miles I'm not going to worry about it.

That has been a problem for yrs, we call it the phantom wiper or its a
device built into the windshield called a pollen sensor and when pollen is
detected it wipes one time,,,no serious now... if they turn on when the car
first starts it may be an indication of a low charge in the battery, other
wise, replace the multifunction switch, its very easy to do, just need a
philips screwdriver

Our 96 van has done this since it was new. We decided to find it
entertaining.

There is a TSB on this problem...the TSB has been out for 5-6 years. Had my 97
GC fixed back in 98-99 by the dealer for no cost. Call your local
Dodge/Chrysler dealer...they may need to do some research on this "old" TSB at
this point...but be persistent.

Thanks for the insights. I thought I was the only one who had this problem.

The TSB is old but it simply has you replacing the switch unit.
My solution was to open the multifunction switch. Notice the lubricant
grease around the edges that is still clean. scrape it of with a screwdriver
and set it aside to use later. Only the clean grease. Now clean the contacts
used for the wiper with a papertowel and a solvent (carb cleaner is good, no
residue). Use some very fine sand paper, 600 or 800 and clean the contacts
enough to get the corrosion off and clean up the contact wear areas. put the
clean grease back on and button it up.
You'll see that this solves the problem for a few years.
Explanation: I suspect small metal particles are allowing some conduction
twixt the contacts that the computer is interpreting as a need to run the
wiper. I decided to do this after reading that the TSB was simply replacing
the switch with an identical switch. worked for me.

I still have this wiper problem after changing the switch. Sometimes nothing
happens for days but then suddenly the wipers start functioning.
Also my Internal Dome lights dont work when I open the door or press the
switch. The Fuel guage also behaves spooky many times. It shows anywhere
from full to half. I have to check the miles after every few days to fill
gas.
Showed it to the mechanic, but he said the computer need programming. This
reprogramming will reset the odometer also which I am bit afraid of. Also
this will cost around $500 w/o labour.
Can anyone help me with my Spooky-Van ?

There is no program for none of that, and there is no way to set the
odometer by reflashing a controller. The fuel gauge problem is more then
likely a bad worn out fuel sending unit in the tank., As far as the wipers
go, it could be anything from The BCM body control module to the wiper motor
to the wiper circuit, Check fuses for the dome lamp circuit??? And find
another mechanic, sounds to me like he dont know what is going on

Dodge dealer for such things since its a 98 Dodge ?

Any technician that is familar with the BCM/wiper system, But we at the
dealer have the shop manuals that Chrysler printed and all the uddates for
the manuals and the technicians that have been working on these cars day in
and day out probably have a better chance of diagnoising the system more
effectively, Im not in any way trying to bad mouth the independents, this is
just my opinion

As you probably know by now, this has been an ongoing problem with the
Caravans, I have found the problem to be a faulty RELAY switch located under
the hood in the BLACK fuse box panel.
The RELAY location is (from the left, the third one to the right) for
the WIPER on /off. The part looks like a 1"square block that simply plugs in.
This is also the same type RELAY that is used for the wiper PULSE, which
could also cause the problem, but not as likely, anyway they are
interchangeable so you only need to buy one---J
