dashboard/lighting problem

Its me again, from the 87 caravan assorted problems thread.

Just got the thermostat changed (the old one was stuck open) and then,
driving to dinner, something odd happened to the dashboard.

With the head, or sidelights (running lights) on, both indicator lights,
and the main beam headlight light came on, the fuel guage, voltage
meter, and oil temp guage went to the lowest reading possible, the temp
guage went all the way to the highest possible. When you turn the
high-beams on (main beam) the main beam light goes out, and when you
indicate, the indicator light comes off when the indicator flashes, the
revere of normal. Turn the dashboard ilumination off, and the battery
voltage light comes on. With no headlights on, and indicating, the
indicator indicator flashes in time, but the guages flicker back and
forth as it blink. (indicator is british for turn-signal btw)

They came on mysteriously, when i was almost back 'at base' and then
when a cop stopped us (got a 'tag applied for' on the back, and he was
checking we had just bought the vehicle, and not dodging tag fees) it
came back again.

Can anyone help me at least narrow down what could be the source of the
trouble.

just for info, its an 87 caravan, with the 3.0 V6 engine.

Many thanks
K`Tetch
