I have a '97 Intrepid, 3.3l, 69,000 miles and live in the Northeast. For
about the last 4 or 5 months I have noticed coolant loss. I can't smell any
coolant and I don't see stains or obvious leaks. The car is driven about
7,000 miles year. Before starting I make sure the expansion tank is filled
to the cold line.

It doesn't consistantly do it  I have seen a week where it didn't loose any
coolant or times when I run a quick errand and the expansion tank is empty
the next morning.

Is that engine known for any problems like this or what are likely
possibilities?

Most likely it's the water pump.  On mine, the pump was behind a cover
plate, and when it leaked the liquid was hidden.  There is a tiny
drain hole for the area behind the cover, which may be plugged.  I
recall there is also a vent hole at the top of the cover.  Mine always
smelled like anti-freeze at the vent hole when the pump was leaking.
I replaced the water pump three times in 125,000 miles, and never once
saw a drop of liquid on the floor of my garage.

Were you loosing similar quantities of coolant as what I described?

The water pump is on a bracket right below the alternator and doesn't seem
to have a cover plate. Do you have a 3.3l?

Possibly the intake manifold gasket leaking and the coolant is getting
sucked in the engine and out the tail pipe, Do you notice any kind of rough
idle?

The idle has never been really smooth in the car. But I haven't noticed any
major change. Is there any "scientific" way to find an intake manifold
gasket leak or do you pull the intake off and have a look?

A good technician could tell by connecting a scan tool and reading the fuel
adaptives. Or using propane to detect for leaks of the intake gasket. The
other way is to have someone add dye to the coolant system and then using a
black lite pick up the leaks that way, If its external.
