I had a similar problem.. Very scary sounding whine, related to idle speeds.
As near as I can figure it's the AC clutch. Being cheap, and my car being
10 years old, I just cut off the AC Belt. No more noise... everything else
is ok, just no more AC.

the compressor is dead. you can buy a replacement from junk yards
(www.car-part.com) for 30 and put a 50 dollar worth gas to keep using
if you care about ac. If you donot care if you have ac, take the belt
out otherwise even you dont turn on the ac, when you put the ac system
on defrost mode, it will kick in the AC compressor. It means lots of
noise.

are you saying that in the winter when I go to defrost the window there is
going to be lots of noise?
Sounds like a bad bearing in the compressor clutch. It can be replaced
without replacing the compressor
