if the purge control valve solved the evaporative purge control issue
then you may need to have the code cleared,or there may still be another
issue with the evaporative system that is in need of repair.

You could have a pinched hose from the throttle body to the purge valve.
make sure the vacuum hose is connected and has vacuum.
The NVLD (Natural vacuum leak detection) switch could be at fault . A series
of test with the proper scan tool is required to check this out

Glen, just got back from holiday and checked car again.I read something on an
earlier posting of things to check.I did check for vacuum at the throttle
body and it was positive and there is no problem with the hose going to the
purge valvefrom the body. What I did then was check for power to the valve by
unplugging the connector to the valve and there was no power present with the
car running or without the car running and thje key in the on position.Where
do I go from here? I now realize that there probably wasnt anything wrong
with the old valve.

Glenn will straighten you out no doubt, but I would expect the purge valve to
only be actuated with the engine running and only for a short duration. Once
the purge cycle is complete that valve should never be actuated...

The purge monitor is run when the vehicle is cold and the engine running,
You almost have to have a scan tool to diagnose such a fault because you
have to know what the freeze frame date was when the fault matured. The
fault code you are getting is NOT a fault code for the (Evap Purge Solenoid
circuit P0443) Its an Evap System Performance Fault. You don't have a
circuit or solenoid problem. Without having a scan tool to actuate the
solenoid you aren't going to be able to test the circuit anyhow.
You need to have the NVLD system checked to see if it is working correctly,
This requires a scan tool to force the monitor to run.
