Sorry for the off-topic post, but I'm peeved. I just got word that Verizon
will stop carrying all Usenet newsgroups other than the "big 8"...a term
which I hadn't even heard of before today!
What does that mean? That means that in less than two weeks I won't be able
to read or post to this newsgroup any longer. I hope no one minds a 3-group
cross-post, but these are the only groups in the alt.* hierarchy I subscribe
to. I only subscribe to two groups that I'll continue to be able to access.
So...if you're a Verizon customer, here's your heads-up. Check the
following link for more info:

-Changes-in-Verizon-s-Newsgroup-Service.aspx
Here's a tinyurl version of the above in case it doesn't work:

Please complain to Verizon...and loudly. I plan to do the same...
Thanks,
Wesley

There are plenty of free usenet servers for discussion groups.
For example: www.motzarella.org
carries all three groups you cross-posted to...

You can always use Google Groups for free.

Yeah, if you want to be a Super-Lamer.

And be ignored. Many of us filter out any posts from Google Groups
because of the amount of spam propagated.
May I suggest looking at teranews:-
http://www.teranews.com/
There is an initial very mall set-up charge and is totally free after
that. I have it as a back-up to my normal usenet account. I haven't
needed it very much but, on the occasions I have, it has proved reliable.

news.motzarella.org has been proved reliable as well and is free. It is
text only though.

Why is that? Every post you make no matter what the news program or
method gets echoed on Google anyways.

As Howard noted, it is because most of the spam originates via GG. Many
folks have just eliminated that source, so any one legitimate that posts
from that source is swept away in that bathwater. It might be like
weeding - once the weeds get too prolific a major dose of Roundup to the
whole area kills them all off, but kills off any good stuff too.
I actually tried eliminating GG and then turned it back on as I missed too
much that I wanted to see.

Not me - yet.
I am enjoying a MUCH improved Usenet experience since I turned off all
the "noise" from GG.

It is much better without GG (and not just for the lack of spam). Some
of the newsgroups I subscribe to had some genuine posters who were a
right pain. Guess which newsgroup service they used. ;-)

In my experience, WebTV.

True, but beware: Since spam from Google Groups is so rampant, more and
more Usenet users, myself included, filter-out (kill file) anything from
that domain.
That's a sad thing for sure but, until Google makes a successful effort
to control what emanates from their domain, the words of legitimate
Google Groups posters will not be seen by many.
