Can someone tell me the difference between a 2001 SOHC 2.0 engine and a
1997 SOHC 2.0 ?

I have a 2001 neon with a broken timing belt and probably bent valves,
etc. & have found a good engine for next to nothing from a 1997 neon.
Can I install that complete engine from the 1997 in my 2001 neon ? I am
thinking that the cost & labor will be less for me to do the engine swap
vs. repairing the head & replacing the timing belt, etc. with the engine
in the car. (I will be doing all of the work myself)

Any opinions on that ?

Also, any recommentations on a shop manual for the 2001 neon would be
appreciated.

Thanks very much in advance !

97s were prone to head gasket leaks if they still have the original
single layer head gasket. Be sure to use the  new design multilayer
gasket. Also use a plastic scraper to remove all residue. Using a
metal scraper damages the mating surfaces and will result im more
problems.
