Donovan ('s Garage) suggests running cool water through the intake manifold
by disconnectinng the coolant hoses, attaching an electric water pump and a
small radiator or heater core.

Has anyone done this? I'm looking for a recommendation on which water pump
to select. Jegs offers a bunch at $250 plus. Are there any cheaper
alternatives?

If I understand what you (and Donovan) are trying to do, you don't need a
$250 electric water pump. This will be in addition to your normal coolant
system and not necessary to keep the engine temp down. Any decent electric
fluid pump should suffice.
