I'd make a wild guess that something is wrong with your transmission.

Yup, sounds like something's wrong with your transmission.
> Could it be a vacuum line or something like that?
Not likely. Have you bothered to check the fluid level in the
transmission? How many miles on it? When was the last time the
fluid/filter were changed?

Well, that would probably be better than YOU working on it. How come you
didn't answer my questions (above)? Do you want help, or not?

Just went through a whole transmission deal and let me tell you this - if
you've always put the correct fluid in it and depending on the mileage (what
is your mileage?) I'd standby on the toasted tranny deal. Everyone is awful
quick to say it's a transmission problem on one of these things when in my
experience it is usually a electrical issue. A whole host of things can
make your transmission go into "limp" mode which is what it sounds like.
With the check engine light on my guess is it is something other than the
tranny that is the problem.

Yep,
My '98 GC Sport was doing the same thing and it turned out to be the speed
sensor module, a relatively inexpensive thing to repair. Of course, this was
on the 5th replacement transmission.

Yes, this seems to be it, speed sensor module (I hope). I'm having my Dodge
mechanic friend check it out tonight. I was just hoping to get an idea of
how hard it would hit me in the wallet...thanks all!

Had a similar problem with my 2000 GC, it was the speed input sensor, only
38$ to buy from the dealer. Unfortunately they soaked me for 100$ to hook it
up to the OBDII tester, I then spent the 150$ on my own OBDII tester and
hope to not have to take it back to the dealer again.

the caravans are known to have a wiring harness that runs across the tranny,
and is chafed by the kick down cable wearing through the harness and
shorting some wires... inspect that harness. I had a similar problem on
mine,,,, fixed the harness and tied it out of the way so it wont wear
again... no problems since

Except that the 41TE transmission doesn't -have- a kickdown cable.

Had the same problem with my 99 Grand Caravan. Problem was the speed
sensor - cost me about $30 to replace it, and if I remember correctly
(although I probably don't...) it only took me a couple of minutes to do it.
Good luck.
