Does anyone know if the belts can be changed on a 308gt4 with the engine in
the car?

I bought the workshop manual, but it doesn't give useful info like that, it
just assumes the engine is out and on the bench.

So does anyone know for sure?  I have googled, but no answers.

Yes, its standard procedure on 3x8s - remove the wheel arch lining on the
right rear & you have full access (well, as full as you'll ever get on a
Ferrari!). Its a big part of what makes 3x8s much cheaper to run than 348s &
355s

Do a search of Ferrarichat.com for more information & some procedural
stuff - AFAIK you'll need a set of cam locking tools.

Well that is pleasing to know, the book doesn't mention special locking
tools, but I can probably fabricate that sort of thing.  I wanted to know
about in situ or not as it would be a much more major job to get the lump
out, and I would have to plan carefully, but in situ sounds like a one or
maybe two day job (bear in mind I haven't done one before !!)

I will have a look for ferrarichat

thank you very much

You are correct sir.  Try searching for "Cam Gear Locking Tool" there's
a long thread on various types and home made attempts.

That would suck to have to remove the whole engine just to change a
belt.

Such is life with 348s  & 355s. On the plus side, doing it makes the rest of
general maintenance a very easy job. To keep things in perspective, I
changed a cambelt on my VW a year or so ago - didn't have to remove the
engine but I did have to take half the front of the car apart just to get to
the thing....it wasn't a short job!
