Matt Borland - 02 Jul 2006 18:14 GMT ...a 2006 Porsche Cayman S...
My employer ordered one and it had just came in. My drive was pretty short, but telling.
The car is very solid, and responsive. The Sport Chrono and Bilsteins make for super-tight handling, without being nervous on bad pavement. The engine has a nice cammy rush from 4k on up, and the 6 speed has nice close ratios. I didn't think "Boxster coupe" once the entire time I drove it. It reminded me of the 993 I drove, except smoother, less raw. The 993 was twitchy and the engine barked and snarled, with the car just lunging and chomping at the bit to be hammered on. The Cayman S encouraged smoothness and the engine note was more refined. I guess I liked the 993 better, but there is a good argument either way. The brakes were outstanding. The car has several neat features too.
The best part? My employer plans on using this as our travelling car, replacing his biturbo S4. That means I'll be driving this car once or twice a week...
I've already planted the seed that he needs a new 911 Turbo next...
He is definitely a Porsche guy, so the Ferrari argument is pointless with him... He likes them, but has no urge to own one.

This appears to be your first post to this group. Was there a particular reason why you felt the need to suddenly drop in and start criticizing the regulars?

To be fair, if he's new here he wouldn't know who the regulars are, maybe he just thought that he was attacking a troll in defense of the group ;) One time is no time, two times is a habbit... :)
Best Wishes Thomas *Ferrari 1-2 baby, yeah!*

I suspect you'll be disappointed by the lack of actual Ferrari content on this group. If you have anything useful to share, perhaps even a Ferrari topic of your own, feel free. This group has a batch of regulars that regularly post OT content and nobody bitches except newbs trying to make a name for themselves by playing diss the troll.
Well, Mark bitches too, but we're all used to him by now.
Occasionally someone comes up with a Ferrari topic that we haven't already covered to death, or someone outside the core group posts a Ferrari question that may get answered if any of us have any helpful information to pass on. Currently we have a few 308s, a 328, a 355 Challenge, a TR, and a 250GTE among the regular posters as well as a few like myself that are still working toward the goal of owning a Ferrari someday. Some people here love F1, some couldn't care less. Some hate TRs, some find the V8 cars lacking, and some just worship anything with the prancing horse on it. Some work on their own Ferraris, and some restrict their mechanical work to applying tyre black. *cough* Most everyone here is friendly, and several of us have met in real life.
Stick around, you'll see.
Or f**k off. I don't care.

Michael Decker - 04 Jul 2006 08:12 GMT Obviously I'm new here.
You're wrong about the lack of Ferrari content - many of the posts I've read are interesting, focused on what the newsgroup was set up for, and tell me more than I knew before about Ferrari. The fact that there's owners giving personal experiences of their cars is a bonus, and the group is also clearly a great resource for people wanting to research a particular vehicle.
But more than half the posts recently seem to be about the ugliness and alleged sexual availability of the wife of a 'regular', along with childish guffawing regarding the word 'gearstick'.
And some guy writing about a drive he had in his boss's Porsche, justified on the basis that he's also one of the 'regulars', is simply irrelevant to this group. He could have emailed the 'regulars' with this exciting tale, or posted it in alt.autos.porsche, or (better still) compared the vehicle with driving the equivalent Ferrari.
Not trolling.... apologies if I appeared impolite - I just want to read about Ferraris.
Have a great day

Well, sadly like so many newsgroups we suffer from trolls who try to stir things up, and spend time stalking us to find a few personal details in order to try to be offensive. Generally we ignore them, sometimes one or two respond, and sometimes when the respondent is Psycho Mike (a prose warrior who's lexicon of abuse is a wonder to behold) then 'cussing' becomes an 'extreme sport'.

Yeah, but see, this is an 'alt' group. You could go to ferrarichat.com and be assured of nothing but on-topic and highly detailed posts, but this is more like a themed bar, you come in with an eye on the dancing donkey over the door, but you can talk about pretty much anything.
> Not trolling.... apologies if I appeared impolite - I just want to > read about Ferraris. Ok. So mine is due for a service and I'm skint.... ...but cam belts are cam belts and they need doing. Last year (having done a paltry 1000 miles) I survived with just an oil change, carried out by general nice person and 328GTS owner, Iain Miller (he who suffered sniping about his beautiful wife from the aforementioned troll - probably because the aforentionned troll will never have a beautiful wife) but this year I'm hoping to get back to my more usual habit of touring in mainland Europe with the car (an '84 308 GTS Quattrovalvole, with very fine black tyres [go f.ck your hat, Matt]) so a proper service is in order if we are to enjoy the Alps without the fear of anything going bang...
So. Who are you? I see you're probably a Brit. The Brits here are few, mostly live in the south, and mostly are or have been Ferrari owners.

thc test subject - 06 Jul 2006 05:23 GMT Jesus H. Christ! Are we back to the mutual love fest marathon? <Sniff>, indeed!
I just wanted to tell all of you that I have decided to buy a shotgun. I think it is best for home protection in the wild, wild west that still exists here in Prescott. The guy at the Quik Stop liquor store a block away from my apartment (they still have Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale!!) told me he sells 30 crystal meth pipes a week. Since I have definitive knowledge of the kind of people who buy such apparati, and considering that my two cats, my TV, and my a/v equipment are more precious to me than life itself (well ... only sometimes for the TV and the a/v stuff), I feel it only necessary that I be able to blow some motherf..king tweaker's chest out of his a.s if threatened.
And, like I did with my mountain bike, I will be affixing a Scuderia Ferrari sticker to the stock. That way the last thing Mr. Tweako will see as blood rushes out of his mouth will be the prancing horse.
I got a job working the graveyard stocking shift at the local Petsmart. That way I get a discount on all the ridiculous things I lavish on Dahlia and Nickie, like Greenies dental treats (liver flavor). And the trip to Guns Guns Guns (also a block away) becomes a reality instead of a pile of bullshit.
A warning to Mikal is now in effect. If he wants to get f.cked in the a.s by a Mossberg 500 Special Purpose - .410 pump loaded with #2 shot and slugs alternating with no choke - I beg him to follow up on his gutless insults and board that plane to his final destination.

You know Winchester makes (made, they went under this year) triple-aught buck for that little .410... I have a few boxes myself. They have 5 pellets per round in the 3" shell, and 3 pellets in the 2.5" version.

Quite.

It's not irrelevant to THIS group. That's what we're trying to tell you.
So do you currently own or aspire to Ferrari?

Matt Borland - 06 Jul 2006 20:02 GMT > Obviously I'm new here. The others have pretty well covered the subject for me. Paul made a good point in that www.ferrarichat.com is a good source for Ferrari owner stories and the like. If you think this group is interesting you'll spend hours sifting through all the threads over there, as they have more members and are much more active.
No offense taken, I just bristle at the bi-yearly "new guy complaining about off-topic content" posts, as we have no moderator here and don't particularly want one.
Have a good one.

(sorry, I meant 'oh really?', but I raised an eyebrow so violently that cramp set in and now I'm stuck in the exact expression that a certain Fox presenter has when someone suggests that his argument lacks credibility. You know the look.).
And I quote:

Now *that's* what I call 'moderation'.

No, no, not for years. The Mondial just needs a clutch. The Fastback has been a parts shelf for some time now, but it will be done by the end of the year. Has to be. It's going to SEMA.
And, everyone, keep your fingers crossed. I think I've found hand controls for the Mondial. I may be driving it to Monterey this year myself!

How cool would it be for you to arrive at the Historics in that Mondial... I hope your hand control system works out.
