Jon - 11 Nov 2003 02:06 GMT Hiya,
Hopefully not all of you will have Mondial on your kill-filter list so someone may actually read this :-)
Just bought a '84 Mondial QV in mint condition (just serviced too) and wondered what to expect regarding running costs over the year. I expect to get around 2-3,000 miles out of it over the 12 months (it's done around 35k to date) and am just concerned really about reliability. The earlier models had some issues I believe but the later versions were apparently improved.
Is there anything I should know, for example, like not to drive it more than 200 miles in one go or the engine blows.... Maybe there's a Mondial Owners Club or something that someone could point me towards?
Please don't respond to me just to slate the Mondial, I've heard it all before!! I love it because it's a Ferrari and it's MINE!! :-)
Regards,
J
Jon - 11 Nov 2003 02:51 GMT Oh, and I'm based in the UK by the way.

FWIW my 328 seems to run out at about ?2K a year for everything (including petrol) for the same kind of mileage (shut up Duffin!). A Mondial will have similar servicing requirements & the insurance etc will be about the same (?400 ish). Seems to be around ?1100 a year for the servicing....one year its Cambelts & the next some other stuff needs fixing then its back to cambelts the year after. Of course there may be some things you need to sort out over the next year or so to get it up to where you want it to be which will cost more. If you are going to be tempted to take it out much before March/April keep an eye out on the roads - the salt is not kind to 'rraris. That said, try and run it reasonably regularly (every 2-3 weeks) during the winter to keep everything moving & oiled up - even if you just leave it running in the drive. ?70 or ?80 for a battery conditioner to keep the batter charged up over the winter is money well spent too.
Once you are confident in the mechanical condition of the car there is no reason why you shouldn't do long trips without worry. After all, our resident "Europhile" Monsieur "MCPD Pointy Burns" himself risks his neck with those foreign types doing 3500 miles in about two weeks across Europe every year in "Old Smokey" - and he seems to get away with it....(mind you he does it wearing Pink Capri pants so maybe that's the trick to it!)
Buy your insurance from Aon & if you are anywhere south of Birmingham you could do a lot worse than take it to Mike Lester at QV for servicing. Maybe consider taking it in for Mike to have a look at it & tel you what you should plan for over the next year or two. Similarly if you are down the south half of the country then get yourself prepared for the first pub run of 2004 - expect around mid to late April (!) depending on when "The Burns" gets his act together, whether Jo can find a day off in the quarter and whether Rupert has reassembled the Porker - I'll just probably turn up as usual!
Sometime in July is the National Concourse meet (450 Ferraris in a field) & there is usually a good day out to be had there (assuming you don't have such a hangover from the night before that you actually manage to get there - ahem!)
As for clubs, just join the FOC - there are a variety of "Area Groups" operating up & down the country if you want to get more involved. www.ferrariownersclub.co.uk
Lastly, do keep checking back in here - it can be dead as a dodo for weeks on end - and then someone mentions the Sultan, MC goes nuts and threatens death & dismemberment to all who take a welding torch to a Ferrari and it all generally goes off again to much amusement all round. We're about due for another "Oh my God look at that hideous replica" thread soon....

Iain, thank you for the kind recommendation, the words of endearment. The first time we ever do meet I can guarantee you I will not have had my medications for at least three weeks, I will have just visited the local knivery, and around my head will be my jiu-jitsu rank sash. And my breath and personal hygiene will be dreadful. You'll wish you were back in The Matrix.

Thanks Iain, very much appreciated. I had planned on around ?1 - 1.5k per year for costs, looks like I wasn't far wrong. Good advice about the battery conditioner too, I'm off to get one today.
I've been following a.a.f for a while now and have appreciated the general advice and occasional troll-baiting! It's only now I've got the car that I dare post tho.
I'm not far from Bristol so I'd be happy to come on the next pub run with you guys (as long as it's not Barbados in 2004...)
My insurance is ?400 as you mentioned, although I went with Heritage rather than Aon (didn't know about Aon at the time - maybe next year).
Cheers again and I've no doubt you'll be hearing from me again before too long! I intend to leech as much knowledge from you guys as is humanly possible, I'm on a pretty steep learning curve at the moment! I'll pay you all back in beer in April I promise.......

Joe McG - 11 Nov 2003 08:25 GMT > Please don't respond to me just to slate the Mondial, I've heard it all > before!! I love it because it's a Ferrari and it's MINE!! :-) Nothing wrong with the Mondial. A practical (ish) 308, - just not quite so beautiful.
Let it warm up before driving it hard. Use it regularly. Keep it serviced. Enjoy. You seem to have the right attitude towards ownership.
Feel free to contact me for a chat. It'll have to be by phone, as time is in short supply ATM.

Depends a lot on the colour. Did he mention what colour he got?

I'm sure I've bragged about this before, but I was at Newport Imports back in, I don't know, 83 or 84, when a prugna Testarossa was being delivered to the owner of the Rusty Pelican restaurant chain. Now, I was told that it was the very first Testarossa in the US, but I believe Ms. Tiger has refuted me on that and it's certainly no big deal to me. But it was an absolutely stunning car. "Prugna" being the Italian word for "prune", the color was a dark, silky purple that just oozed power, sex, etc. Lou Ferrigno could have looked sexy in that car.

Jon - 12 Nov 2003 14:13 GMT not far off.. it's rubino :-)

Ooh, that's unfortunate! You are now the proud owner of one of the world's most expensive and finest performing... bricks.
You'll love it though. <g>

Jon - 13 Nov 2003 01:54 GMT I kinda like the colour.
It takes a few seconds longer for ppl to go "Ooooooh it's a Ferrari!"
:-)

I believe that *particular* is the term you are searching for. No, it's probably *fastidious*.

MCPD (I can promise a ride in 308, and I'd bet a certain low-mileage 328 too)

There are at least 2 Ferraris in my hometown, but only one beeing driven (And as the owner doesn't know how to handle it it's wrecked as often as it's fixed). The Non-driven one is a F40 I think Hey, do a Pub-Run Sweden and pick me up allong the way ;) ;)
Best Wishes Thomas

Paul - 22 Nov 2003 09:09 GMT Just seen your message, i can see you have already had some sound advice. I only wish i had when i bought my 1st Mondial. The only problem i ever had was the car would stop and the battery would be flat after long journeys.
I took it to Dk Engineering in Watford. "BIG MISTAKE " they diagnosed it to be the starter motor draining, this they did and charged me ?800.00 and guess what the problem was still there.
In the end a simple person like myself was convinced it was just an electrical drain, i disconnected the old alarm system ( it was never active ) and that was the end of that. i had many miles of trouble free driving and was able to take the kids out with no concerns.
The kids are now teenagers so i own a 308Gts 1979 carb, and this is just heaven.
Happy days
Paul
> Hiya, > [quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > > J Paul Duffin - 22 Nov 2003 16:50 GMT > I took it to Dk Engineering in Watford. "BIG MISTAKE " They've been around a few years. Do you think they just made a mistake or was it something worse? Did you tell them and offer them a chance to put things right?
The one and only time QV ever made a 'mistake' (they put a warped disk on my 308) they called me up, told me they had a problem, apologised that it would take a couple of days to get a replacement part, then sorted it FOC.
MCPD
Paul - 23 Nov 2003 01:23 GMT They didn't want to know, they were rude and couldn't care. I have had work done by Paul Hargreaves & Khpc and both of these firms have been fab.
I guess Dk do give good service but just not to me at that time. Sadly i will never use them again so they have lost some income, but not much to them though >
