everyman - 12 Jan 2004 16:45 GMT Excuse me if it has been done to death but was the car a Ferrari (275 GTB?)after all? I have the film on dvd and it doesn't sound like a mercedes as some people have said. All I can say is that it doesn't sound like a V8 and it's very high revving...
Bert Kanters - 14 Jan 2004 11:11 GMT It was a Renault Alpine Berlinetta driven by Jean-Louis Schlesser and the soundtrack came from a 330P.

Really? Not a VW super Beetle and a 312P?
everyman - 14 Jan 2004 18:12 GMT > "Rendevouz"? Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I am talking about "C'etait un rendezvous" the 9 minute movie by Claude Lelouch with the car that's racing through Paris.

everyman - 14 Jan 2004 18:00 GMT > It was a Renault Alpine Berlinetta driven by Jean-Louis Schlesser and the > soundtrack came from a 330P. So is this information the definitive "official" take on this story? I can see it being a racing V12 but I don't understand how on earth they managed to match the sound and picture exactly if they used a different car. All through the movie what the car does on the streets is followed 100% by the engine and tire noises. And there was no digital processing of any kind back then that it would make it easy... Wouldn't it be easier if they just recorded pic and sound simultaneously? Maybe a question for a movie-making group this....
thanks

It sounds like WebCrap to me... No webcrap, from a serious Dutch car magazine, confirmed by respected members from the French Ferrari scene. Lelouch never drove the car himself. He said so back in those days, to help establish the myth, but admitted later it was not true.

Count the gearshifts, estimate the revs and he should be doing over 200 km/h. Then measure the distances, on a map or in practice and time the movie and you'll see that they never came close to those speeds.

If you listen very closely there are some rather erratic tyre squeels where there shouldn't be. It all sounds rather cartoonish at times. I read somewhere (can't recall where) that the soundtrack was damaged during the filming and was overdubbed later.

Claude Lelouch claimed (he was an owner of a fly yellow 275GTB/4) that the film was shot off the nose of a four cam, but the people that were there aren't talking so we'll never know.
Many people claim the film's sped up, but if you watch the birds and pace of the flashing lights, you'll see that it's not overcranked.
As for how fast he really goes, I did the route in 1993 (at 4am behind the wheel of Audi 80) and he's not going that fast, I didn't have the courage to blow off the red lights like he did, but you can really go quicker in places if you know what you're doing and where you're going.
The run from Porte Maillot Metro to the Arc just before the turn in takes him 40 seconds and it's only half a mile (45mph).
From the exit at Place De Gaulle down the Champs Elysees to the entry at Place de la Concorde 66 seconds over 1.1miles (60 mph).
From the Concorde Exit down the Quai Des Tuileries to the Pont Du Carrousel he goes his quickest covering .7miles in 38 seconds (67mph). This is not surprising as there's no risk of cross traffic until the bridge (Seine on the right and the De Jardin Tuileries on the left).
The rest of it isn't much more impressive (other than the garbage trucks and the irrepressable white Mini!). Actually his best driving is on the right/left Rue Caulaincourt/Ave Junot section, but even there he's only going 35 mph on average.
If any of you are interested in driving the route, here 'tis......
Off the motorway at Porte Maillot bear right Join Avenue De La Grande Armee Don't forget to turn before hitting the Arc and turn right in the traffic circle Rejoin Avenue Des Champs Elysees Right at the Place De La Concord Left Quai Des Tuileries Left Port Du Carrousel (this was blocked off last time i was there) and past the Louvre Pyramide Out and on Rue de Rohan then quick left up the Avenue De L'Opera Jink right around L'Opera on Rue Halevy through to Rue De La Chaussee and jink right around Ste. Trinite on Rue Blanche Quick right on Rue Pigalle. Left at Place Pigalle down De Clichy Blvd Right Rue Caulaincourt, Hard right on Ave Junot becomes Rue Norvins, left past Cimetire St. Pierre, right on Card Guibert (careful here, he's gone the wrong way down a one way street, likely for dramatic effect) and right into the Place du Parvis du Sacre Coeur.
I was hoping a hot blonde would be there to meet me on the steps (but then again Claude Lelouch's wife's a little long in the tooth now), but there was just some bum sleeping next to the crepe stand to salute the end of my drive.

Bert Kanters - 23 Jan 2004 12:13 GMT Not a Dauphine, an Alpine Berlinetta which is a light & low, rear engined sportscar with polyester body and 1600 engine. Exactly the car that looks to go faster than it really does. The movie was recorded with no sound at all, as Lelouch had 9 minutes of 35mm film left from shooting another movie. The engine sounds later added are NOT from a 275 (not that I would know the difference). Schlesser is not a poof (not sure what exactly "poof" means but I'm sure he is not), he was later a Formula 1 (test)driver. And I quoted my source elsewhere in this same thread, it was the respected Dutch car magazine "Autovisie" that did a thorough research and spoke among others to respected members of the French Ferrari club/scene. The fact that there is so much confusion about this movie is because Lelouch planned it that way and likes to keep up the myth until now.

Hear Hear! I've decided I don't care and when I watch it I'm always going to think it's a 275 GT/B. Period.

Not so much. Since you were here last, I've won the World Challenge Championship, gotten married and had 2.3children. OK, not exactly, but I did log my best time ever at Willow Springs, beat all the Viper guys and I am engaged.

If I'd ever managed to nail Turn 9 I would have been even quicker. As it was, the two big slides I did thru the outside of 9 were pretty cool to watch.

I found someone who's doing much better than I am. And of those 3 cats, 1 of them is mine from before this relationship and we share custody of The Kids.

You seriously need to get over yourself already.
<<How about just backing up his spew with substance?>>
Disagreeing with you or having different information is *spew*?
<<He's made outrageous claims, and when asked for confirming sources he pretends they exist but he won't divulge them from petulance at being asked to substantiate himself... >>
Prove that he is *petulant*. At least provide more evidence than the mere fact that he decided that talking to you was a waste of time for him.
<<What else should I call it?>>
How about you just ignore it as so many others are prone to ignoring you?
