Lap record continues to tumble at Barcelona
But this time it’s Jenson Button who breaks it [22/01/04 - 18:36]

For the third successive day the lap record at Barcelona tumbled. But
this time it wasn’t Ralf Schumacher and the Williams FW26 that
shattered the record. Instead it was BAR’s Jenson Button.

The Brit completed 85 laps of the Circuit de Catalunya and put in a
best lap time of 1:14.607. Button’s fastest lap was 1.013 seconds
quicker than Ralf Schumacher’s lap record, which he set on Wednesday.

Michael Schumacher came the closest to beating Button, however, he
wasn’t anywhere ‘close’ to the BAR driver. Schumacher’s best time on
his return to testing was a 1:15.410. The Ferrari driver completed 95
laps. Renault’s Fernando Alonso was third quickest, putting in a
marathon 102 laps at the Spanish circuit. Ralf Schumacher followed
him, while Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer completed the top six.

Times:
J. Button - BAR Honda - 1'14.607 (85 laps)
M. Schumacher - Ferrari - 1'15.410 (95 laps)

Just curious - they unveil the new car on Monday - do they begin public
testing with it immediately?  It seems like last year's car may not cut it.

Likely to spend the first few days "breaking track records" at Fiorano and then
off to Spain once the team is confident no major problems exist.  Seems to be
the pattern over the past few years.
