We were cruising home from Laguna on Sunday night in the M5 and were at first annoyed that there were no cupholders and then amused that we were annoyed. HOWEVER-it is generally accepted that they are pretty much useless, and have an operational lifespan of about 6 coffee's/drinks. Many have mused about how such a superb vehicle could have a part that is out-designed by any Korean or Russian auto manufacturer. The truth, I think, is that they were purpose designed by BMW. The "purpose" being to mock the perceived (and probably true) predilection that North Americans have for needing to constantly be refueling the driver. I remember seeing a German cartoon depicting a special "North American Mod" for a vehicle.
