What is up with that dash? It's hideous. And the cockpit looks empty without
the gated shifter.

Not even a little T-bar for reverse, just a button.....

The downward mobility of themes introduced in the Enzo, Scaglietti and
575M.

They really need to get their design studio back under control.

Knowing how to drive is no longer an element of owning a Ferrari.

Truth be told, that's a huge positive in my book.

Don't like buttons.  The only button should be the start. For reverse a
simultainous right/left paddle pull (neutral) and then a left/right/left
paddle.

Fair enough, but the proverbial _anything_ is better than the cheap
and cheezy looking T-bar.

Cheezy yes.  Cheap?  Nothing that comes in a pretty yellow Ferrari replacement
part box is cheap!

Not sure how I feel about a reverse button. The Aston uses one, which means
that my race car has one too.

<<For reverse a simultainous right/left paddle pull (neutral) and then a

It would never work. Well, it would work after you went thru the sequence a
half dozen times. Trust me, the computer is so damned picky that it would
demand the most precise timing of paddle clicks in order to shift into reverse.
I'm sure that the planets would have to be properly aligned and and an exact
number of dogs would need to be baying at the moon for the TCU to accept the
*request to shift* to reverse as opposed to down/up/down.

That's what you get when you don't get a gear.

Well, whilst Tiger knows a great deal about this, I do not. So,
what is the difference? (and don't get snotty with me, Mark - it's an
honest question). Surely both race and street applications are designed
as driver aids to enable more efficient shifting, no more or less (except in
terms of relative effectiveness)?

...or am I missing something?

[sigh]

The purpose and advantage in racing is integration of engine controls
with the shifting process, smoothing and regulating shifts, and
eliminating missed shifts, out of concern for both competitiveness and
engine/drivetrain reliability, along with simply reducing the time of
gearchange increasing acceleration.

The practical advantage for street cars is only the elimination of the
manually actuated clutch, and offering a so-called sporting automatic
shifting option, widely expanding the potential owner pool to less
involved, more lifestyle-seeking, purchasers (there may be a  small
warranty/reliabilty carry-on as well).

...Or does anyone really see a need for 15ms gearchanges a street car?

If you match revs you needn't use the clutch at all... should get you
down to 19-18, no sweat.

...But then you get to buy a new gearbox every 600miles.

That depends:   Only god knows which part you find implausible...
TigerRace1 - 24 Dec 2004 18:16 GMT
<<That depends:   Only god knows which part you find implausible...>>

1. Which god?

2. The part where you two are joking about being able to shift a standard
transmission faster than a paddle-shifter designed for the street, let alone
faster than a race car driver using a race box, let alone almost as fast as a
real, formula 1 tranny.

I clearly didn't specify.  Please consult a dictionary.

...But, I suppose Prometheus would be appropriate in this case.

Yeah...

*No*.  *I* was dead *serious*.

I think Bob may have been joking though, I've never actually seen him
drive.

...Once again though, you've missed the point comprehensively, rather
handily making the joke yet again about you:  "Congratulations".
TigerRace1 - 27 Dec 2004 18:51 GMT
<<...But, I suppose Prometheus would be appropriate in this case.>>

Prometheus is not a god. He is a Titan.

<<...Once again though, you've missed the point comprehensively>>

I asked a question based on the fact that your *joke* was too ludicrous to be
funny. Of course, you couldn't just confirm your intention. No, you had to
continue your little schoolyard antics.

I believe that your response to such a response was something like, "Oh, and
what else could you say?"

Get over yourself already, man. Have a drink or stop drinking. Do something
different.  Perhaps you could sit down and have a chat about Ferraris with some
interested parties. That might be fun, eh?

Indeed.  Alas, it is not to be here.

Here, discussion of Ferrari or Ferraris is woefully subservient to
logrolling, glad-handing, materialistic self-aggrandizement, and an
exceptionally insipid version of Follow the Queen.

...Woefully.

Considering how you love to leap on everyone else's errors, I find it amusing
how you ignore your own.

Then move along already. Don't let us bind you here.

An engineer with a sick sense of humour designed that.

Nothing *cheap* about it. It's a beautiful piece of billet aluminum. It's just
a complete PITA to use. Especially on track.
