YT - 08 Jan 2005 22:37 GMT Hi,
I'm new in the subject of Ferrari's.
I've been looking to buy a Testarossa. But what troubles me is the cost of maintenance. Can anyone give me any idea.
Lots of thanks
Yves
LIW - 08 Jan 2005 23:38 GMT > Hi, > [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > > Yves Depends on where you are and which model you purchase.
Generally speaking, in California USA the basic minimum quote for an engine out major service (30,000 miles or X years) is $7,000 USD. Clutch replacement is around every 20,000 miles at $2,500 or so. Rear tires are known to wear out quickly, and brakes as the vehicle is heavy, and torque laden.
Electronics are reputedly fairly stable and reliable, if that word can be used.
Catalytic converters are reputed to burn in later years.
My mechanic advises that if one is looking for a reliable model, the 328 in later years is reliable, and running costs aren't too high.
Also, on the Testarossa, look for leather to have lifted, or shrunk in the interior, bolster wear, and so on.
YT - 09 Jan 2005 09:26 GMT LIW,
Thanks
I live in Europe.
Another question : I wanted to buy a car like that as I future oldtimer/classic + the fact that it has always been a dream. Now I've been into restoring cars for ages now and I know my way around cars.... can someone with reasonable mechanical experience do his own maintenance ? I've found some company in the US that is selling workshop manuals for these cars. So that should help me out a lott.
Thanks again.
Yves

I haven't pulled an engine since the 60s, so I rely solely on mechanics. I'd be more tempted to work on my own 328 than a Testarossa, but there are others here that know much more than I do, or you could ask this question at Ferrari.chat.
Paul Duffin - 09 Jan 2005 20:55 GMT > or you could ask this question at Ferrari.chat. What?? and get nothing but friendly expert advice from people who know what they're talking about???
How dull!
Stick around here and get a bunch of offensive ill-informed rubbish instead...
...and we're better looking here.
...and when Psycho Mike gets his connection back, it'll be much more fun.

coco - 15 Jan 2005 21:07 GMT In France, few people buy Testarossa because V12 is expensive. For me, it is the worst Ferrari to buy and drive every week end... Only to drive one time per month... It depends of your budget. But think to 348 who is a recent and good car, only 8 cylinders who is able to be driven for lot of kms without problems. But buy a car less than 30000 kms.

Better yet a late, low mileage, 328. Much less money to run.....
Paul Duffin - 21 Jan 2005 23:47 GMT > Better yet a late, low mileage, 328. Much less money to run..... 'specially if you keep it to under 5 miles per annum.
Paul P.S. We owe you dinner (I'd add that we owe you some decent wine, but it would break us financially ;-)

>(I'd add that we owe you some decent wine, I'll drink anything, me ! Akshually, to be more exact, after far too much Stroh Rum up the mountain in Oshtria last week I'm not really drinking very much at the moment!

Indeed, you'd think that as one approached 40 one wouldn't drink several shots of Stroh 60 (on top of lord knows what else) and then try & get on a sledge and ride it 5 miles down a mountain in the dark.....then again....

[quoted text clipped - 15 lines] > Hell, that's just about why I'm nursing a blown-out knee this week. > (...No Stroh's though.) My sympathies - we survived but for one set of bruised ribs, two knackered backs and several other bruised backsides. Me, I can't really remember a thing about it - I remember getting on my Rhodle (sledge) at the top and various bits of high speed (and very fluid!) travel down the hill (but not 5 miles worth - and it surely is that far!). I remember stopping somewhere round the middle & phoning my Missus to say I was still alive but that we seemed to have lost a couple of people and I remember getting to the end and giving the Rhodle back again....but apart from that and a bruise on my arse I can't seem to recall very much else as to what happened in between really - except that it was all very, VERY funny!

Where's the ranting from the purist? I see no advice being offered here! Your knee has nothing to do with Ferrari!
Never mind, seeing you connecting with other people without being condescending is so refreshing I'll just stop stirring the pot now. Just try to keep this in mind when you decide to start being a prick again, would you?

Sharing boozer stories, news client software suggestions and even restaurant reviews is usenet SOP; sharing fashion tips about ricing-up Mustangs in a 328 GTS titled thread in a Ferrari group is something else entirely.
