My wife and I are planning a trip to Italy next year.  This will be our
first time outside of North America, so wanted to get some comments on the
best time of year to go.  I understand it's pretty hot there right now, so
would late spring or early fall be better?

I've heard that getting a factory tour is next to impossible for the average
guy, so don't have any high expectations where that's concerned.

Thainks.

My parents went to southern Italy (way south - Sicily) in the early Spring
(April), and it was splendid.  They also spent a few days in Rome on the
same trip and had wonderful weather.

FWIW ..

Your definition of "pretty hot" would depend on where you live in the US!

It also depends on what you want to do when you are there - if you want to
spend a lot of time trekking around places like Florence then
March/April/May would seem to be a good time. It would be quieter in early
May rather than April because the kids are all in School. At the other end
the weather will be quite mild right into October - there must be a website
or two that can tell you average temperatures etc on a month by month basis.

Even though you might struggle to get a factory tour there are still some
very fine displays of Ferraris in & around Maranello.

April, May or September, October have always been my choices. If you go in
summer be prepared to fight the hoards of tourists. Never go in August as
all of Italy is on vacation and many things are closed.
