Nino Barlini - 26 May 2005 22:47 GMT For those of you going to the Indy F1 who aren't too familiar with the area (i.e. you don't remember the number for the Slippery Noodle Inn), there is an excellent guide in the latest issue of RACER magazine beginning on page 50. (July 05, Issue #159 - I have no idea why they're so far ahead ...) I would be happy to clip the article and send it to whoever is most inexperienced, but my roommate, Oscar Madison, hasn't read it yet and once he's finished it will be deposited in one of his slobby junk piles and become a part of ancient history.
One bit of help: the number for the Slippery Noodle Inn is 317-631-6968. Hoist one for me. Hell, hoist ten for me.

I used to get to read RACER at my old job, but I missed that article.
Hopefully I'll get to spend a few hours in the presence of one T308 on the Indy trip as well. Should be a cool experience overall.
We're meeting up with TR1 in Cleveland before the June race so the AAF lovefest continues, just a few more people to visit within the year I suppose...
If things play out right we'll see you too Mike, how cool is that?
I'd have never thought this would happen when joining this group back in '98-'99...

But you won't see me in Cleveland, that's for sure. I wouldn't go there if I had a gun to my head.
Although, I said that about New York City, didn't I?

Why not? The city isn't the most appealing one that I've heard of, but for a weekend of racing, it ain't bad.
<<Although, I said that about New York City, didn't I?>>
Indeed.

What's up with McLure, btw? Did he make a mistake switching from Vette to Viper?
More observations: - I think Wolf Henzler might start cleaning up in that series like he did in the Supercup series. The guy is smooth. I'd like to see what he can do in a different car (different marque).
Derek Bell is really having problems with that car, especially off the blocks. I think it might have been a little premature for Volvo to try and race it.
I liked seeing Heinricy in there, I have a lot of respect for what he's done for the Corvette program and now the CTS-V program. Plus, there's nothing like a ringer. Hell, Mad Max was one for awhle.

It's a great track, plenty of good places to sit and watch the action, easy to get nice and close. The food ain't half bad either...
I'll be driving on it in a 924S SE (with M030 sport suspension) in a couple weeks, after several years of attending events and trackdays just wishing I could drive out there...
It's just a driver's ed type event but I'm just thrilled I finally saved the scratch to go...

That's a very good question. McClure was on the verge of winning the Championship 2 yrs ago when he got creamed at Road America. Then last year SCCA bungled things, messing with the rules every 10 minutes and screwing the Corvettes left and right, did him in. He hasn't been on the ball at all this year. I wasn't at the first few races, so I'm not sure what happened there. I'll look him up at Cleveland and get the 411. On a side note, he's one of the nicest guys at the track.
<<More observations: - I think Wolf Henzler might start cleaning up in that series like he did in the Supercup series. >>
Oh, yeah. If he hadn't made that bonehead move at Road Atlanta, he would have finished on podium there, too.
<<Derek Bell is really having problems with that car, especially off the blocks. I think it might have been a little premature for Volvo to try and race it.>>
Derek is THE nicest guy at the track and he's said himself that the Volvo's got issues. Funny thing though, this is the second time in two races that I've had to hold my breath and not hit him at the start. <g>

For all the sh.t I've run through this vessel, and all the sh.t doctors have run (and are running) through it, my liver values are still normal. Go figure. I'll never be autopsied, I can guarantee that.

ps - just don't give up the sauce before I get a chance to come out there again; I might have a little Chalone or Santa Cruz Mtn. Vineyards something or other to quaff. There are no wineries in Arizona (Kokopelli Vineyards doesn't count; makes good marinade). As long as California doesn't keep sliding down hillsides I'll still be able to procure. (To some they may be just rich people living foolishly on the side of a hill, but not to me - I lived only a mile from Bluebird Canyon for a spell and it is a beautiful, beautiful place.)

I wouldn't pour grappa for my worst enemy.
Wait, yes I would.
Same goes for that horrible pear liquer, it usually has a pear in the bottle (Williams). Horrible stuff. (I worked in the liquor industry for years.) Give me some Wild Turkey Rare Breed or - on a very special occasion - some special-label Johnny Walker. Now that I've been ruined by a gift of JW Blue, I'm not sure if Black or Gold will ever suffice again.
We can always use new blood here, lurker. I know you've come out of the woods a couple times, but c'mon - you haven't lived until you've been shredded by Mark or calculatingly cut to pieces by Tiger or - if you're really foul - had obscenities and threats of death screamed at you, in ALL CAPS, by me.
But I've mellowed.

It's more of an obsequious faux-aristocracy.
Nino Barlini - 02 Jun 2005 06:27 GMT > If it were just a clique, it would be tolerable... > > It's more of an obsequious faux-aristocracy. You know, when I started coming in here, it was because I loved Ferraris. I still do. But I criticized almost everybody in here; in fact, I was a total a.shole. Maybe you remember that. I personally drove away dozens of people. I outed people's real names, sometimes accidentally, sometimes not. At that time, those in here tolerated me. Now I'm glad they did.
Did it ever occur to you that a lot of us are friends now, which is kind of nothing more than a distant desire or goal in most newsgroups? It's been great for those of us able to meet. But it's not fun to see/hear/listen to constant criticism. It's boring, as a matter of fact. And basically it's just because you really don't like one of the posters here. That person can be equally scratchy sometimes - but not on your level. I see haughtiness, a superiority gig, even sheer in-your-face sneer power in so many of your posts. You're smarter than that. Nobody here cares about the big mighty words.
I hate writing this, because I actually like you quite a bit. I hope to meet you someday soon, without worry that I have to meet your fist first. I like to hang with people who are very intelligent and speak their mind. People who are cultured and well-spoken. You know damn well that there's a difference between speaking your mind and ripping them to shreds with big words. But you can't just only rip people who aren't like you or don't share your opinions or who don't agree with you. What if the "faux-aristocracy" you see here consisted of *you* at the top, and all of us the pathetic acolytes who hung on your every word? I bet you wouldn't be ripping as hard. I think you'd be liking it just fine.
Because I'm not an F1 expert, I don't go to the other group I know you frequent. But I've never heard anything good about your presence there, although I would not judge you by that. Are you the king over there?
With all due respect - and I truly mean that - if all you do here is act all irritated and eager for target practice, I think you should start your own Ferrari group. Alt.auto.ferraris, or the other one that has a name similar to this one, never has a soul in it. If you started posting there I'm sure others would show up. You could finally and completely have it your way.
Good people who know things about Ferraris and about cars - people who could help with the technical questions that have almost disappeared from this group because they don't want to get the snippy-a.s reaming that almost always comes - leave here after one post. That almost says it all. I don't know what else to say.

tee-hee!
The real problem is that people lack any insight. I don't want to roll out the old 'there's good in everybody' line (partialy because it's not true), but it seems to me that those of us who can see behind the mask tend to stay (and the rewards are great) but not everyone either posseses that ability or lasts long enough to aply it.
You're right, Mike. a conversaton with MJF around is a little like walking into a room occupied by a bad tempered dog with itchy teeth. ...and in newsgroups there are no big dogs, just snappy ones.
So Mark, how about welcoming a stranger some time, or helping someone by giving them the benefit of your extensive knowledge, rather than trying to make them look like fools for the sake of their ignorance.
If you did, they might stay and who knows; you might get to like them.

I posted this a while back. Take heed:
I Link, Therefore I am by George Simpson, Monday, Apr 25, 2005 8:17 AM EST
A WEST NYACK, N.Y. MAN was found dead at his computer apparently the victim of trying to keep up with too many professional forums. Childress H. Wanamaker, 54, an account executive at a New York-based new media company, died of starvation according to the West Nyack coroner's office. Wanamaker's emaciated body was found by Loraine, his wife of 26 years, who told MediaPost she had been bringing her husband meals on plastic trays for weeks, but that he never took the time to eat them. "He was glued to his computer 24/7," she said tearfully. "He was so afraid he was going to miss an opportunity to contribute a comment or start a discussion, that he just stopped eating." She added that Wanamaker's last words were "OK Picard, stick that in your pipe and smoke it..."
Computer forensic specialists from SUNY at Cortland discovered that Wanamaker was subscribed to 48 different forums and networking communities including one apparently having to do with the elderly called "oldtimers" and another apparently limited to just 100 people. They also found that he posted a comment into one forum or another on an average of two per minute every hour of the day for the past seven weeks.
"He felt under terrible pressure to be part of the online community," said his son, Lucian, who says he tried several times to get his father's attention and lure him away from the computer. "The only time he even looked up was when I told him I had seen Dane Madsen trying to steal his car out of the driveway."
Police found what appeared to be an organization chart taped to the wall of Wanamaker's den with lines linking small photos of people unknown to the police including a Tom Hespos and an Adam Boettiger. Neither is considered a suspect in Wanamaker's death.
"Once, I thought I had him," said Lucian Wanamaker, "when I said that mom had made cookies, but half out of his chair, he just sat back down mumbling something about two Roman gods; I believe it was Jupiter and Atlas having some sort of titanic battle. 'Let them eat PIE,' he bellowed banging on his keyboard."
Computer forensic specialists reported that there was no order or continuity to Wanamaker's forum postings. "It looks like he just sort of randomly commented on whatever was in the discussion string at the time," said Stephen Hall, CUNY-Cortland adjunct professor of intemperate and impulsive behavior. "He let nothing go by unchallenged by his own point of view, nor failed to respond to any other community member asking for advice or a new job. This consumed not only 24 hours a day, but also, apparently, his physical health."
In what must be a record, Wanamaker was linked into to over 15,250 other community members, many of whom he exchanged notes with daily. He also contributed to 375 blogs and was expected to start an online column about the impact of interactive communications on health, when he died.
A virtual memorial service will be held online at a date to be determined.

It's almost flattering, in a creepy sort of way. Do you think this will rise to outright stalking? The poor boy can hardly post without mentioning me, even when he starts his own threads about subjects that have absolutely nothing to do with me specifically. I especially liked the time that he posted what he must have imagined to be quite the zinger and since everybody ignored him, he actually posted it again a month later! How cute is that?

But of course.
Funny thing is, most people who meet me IRL end up thinking I'm really some sort of snuggle bunny or something. Except for that damned rabbit of yours!
Ya know, them's good eatin'!

"Where? behind the rabbit?"

I gave him your address and phone ... sent him a ski mask and some of those black leather man-beater gloves with the insert for quarter rolls (like in Dirty Harry). Air fare. Complete local-area maps. Security codes to the house and the shop. Satellite surveillance. He forced me. If I didn't he was going to make me listen to a badly scratched Horowitz LP repeatedly.
Sorry.

Why is it that whenever a group of friends or friendly people chat online, other people term them a *clique*?

I went to the new Wynn and dined and drank at the "Corsa" restaurant. The entire place was read on black with F1 photos all over the wall. Food, decent but overpriced. Booze, overpriced (Shot of Johnny Blue $45!) but tasty.
Also visited the Penske/Ferrari dealership. All the late model stuff on display (inc. a Black Enzo) but pride of place near the entrance (through which you must pay $10 to pass) was held by a friggin' 1990 Testarossa. Overpriced at $79k and ugly as hell in white. Yikes!

Don't know about the "Miami Vice" Testy. Always liked those in fly yellow, rossa corsa (of course), black, and silver
