Well if cam and engine work runs into the $30k range,
imagine the cost of restoring the whole car.
Like let's say a 1990 Testarossa, you buy and it and begin restoring it.
Even the seats wear out with extended use, so where would you get new leather seats?
I doubt the Maranello factory still even makes replacements.
Anyone have a ballpark figure for the whole car?

Thanks in advance,

D.H.

Ferrari supports their cars like few automakers do.  But you pay for it.  I
would imagine that Ferrari does, indeed, stock seats for the Testarossa
line, or will make them.  It will not be cheap.

My ballpark would be $80,000 for a complete restoration (plus the cost of
the car).  That probably makes it not worth it, unless you REALLY love the
Testarossa.  A later model like the F512M (which should not require such a
restoration, really) would probably be substantially higher.

You didn't say if it was a "crash" restoration or just a ground-up - there
could be a difference in cost if, say, you have to replace entire pieces due
to crash damage.

My ballpark is based on nothing other than guesswork.  Here's some links
that might help you.  Many are restoration places, but they might help you
with parts costs if that's what you want.  These were some that I already
had, plus stuff off just the first page of a "Ferrari"+"restoration" Google,
so you can see, there's lots of info out there.  Do something like this
without planning, you might as well just light your wallet on fire (and your
bank, etc.).  Good luck!

Heh. You don't know how true that is, Mikey, but not in the way that you mean.

Didn't actually get names. Was just one of those typical discussions concerning
the Factory and race support outside of F1 and Ferrari Challenge. Specifically,
there is none. Prodrive is kicking butt right now and they can't even buy
engines from Ferrari. Very frustrating and very expensive situation to be in.
It just shows, once again, that the only reason anyone races a Ferrari is for
love of the marque.

And THAT, my friends, is the hook. That's why Ferrari gets away with so much.
They know that we have no other choice. There is only one Ferrari. Everything
else is just... well, everything else.

You're welcome,  David.

As Mikey said, *Ferrari supports their cars like few automakers do.* That made
me laugh. Ferrari is an interesting company. Their *support* is uneven at best.
At times it seems that they would much rather you just buy a whole new car than
assist you in keeping an older model running.

As for my talk with the guys from Prodrive, well, that's another interesting
thing about Ferrari. As I've said before, the only racing they really care
about is F1 and Ferrari Challenge. Look at how well the Ferraris are doing in
ALMS right now. How much factory support do you think they are getting compared
to the Corvette team?

That's all I'm sayin'. <g>

I suppose it would be the cost of the 2nd TR you buy to use for parts
to rebuild the 1st, plus labor and other consumables like paint.

Well I meant that about his comment on how Ferrari supposedly supports
it's late model cars with parts and other support.

Someone was scoffing at that supposition of his.

I think Phil was having a little fun.  Although I suppose to some Ferrari
restorers it would seem best to just buy a second "parts" car when all is
said and done - I don't believe that's necessary but I admittedly have no
personal experience in the game.

By the way, my last email was just a whiny missive from a bitch who was
having a migraine - please forgive me.  The whole purpose of this forum,
besides getting the chance to be a whiny bitch, etc., etc., is to give
freely of information, advice, and assistance.

With that out of the way, allow me to go OT:  anybody heard about this
little gem?

Looks like the precious 575GT gets a little more hot breath down its neck in
FIA next season (I think they're both actually going to run the last race of
the season - Estoril?, but Lambo will only have the prototype so I wouldn't
expect any hell-bent-for-leather laps from them ....)

Not from me it ain't.  If anything, I'll get the tar and feathers.  I just
feel bad a bit that I sniped at him for something stupid.  It's best to save
insults and such for matters that truly require them!

MC

- yes, that's *me* saying that.  Or maybe it's one of my other Mikes ...
things are so confusing these days ...
