Hi

I'm not sure of the technical term, but the notched piece of metal
(complete unit) that resticts the opening and holds the door open at
various positions has failed at the bit where it screws onto the door.
Are the units interchangable, front to back or left to right to
facilitate a temporary repair till I can get a replacement. Do Fiat
(or anyone else) do straight ones that I can replace them with, as the
deep notches seem to put a strain on the mechanism? The same part on
all other make of cars that I have had are straight

All help gratefully received

Ian B

Hi Ian,

I presume you mean the lever that holds the door at 2 or 3 positions
(depending on the car) when it's open. As far as I know the technical
term for this is 'check-strap'. Two years ago and after I'd only owned
my Punto MKII for only 2 weeks, I had to replace mine on my driver's
door because as soon as I opened it, gusts of 80mph grabbed the door
from my hand suddenly and wrenched the check strap and moved the door
slightly upwards!!

I had the work done at Reg Vardy's Bodyshop. They are based in the West
Midlands and mainly sell Fords, however they carry out work on other
makes & models. I believe there might be other similar bodyshops around
the UK. If the FIAT dealer near you can give you a good price, I'd have
the work done there, otherwise try a local independent car repair
bodyshop. To give you an idea of how much it's going to cost, I paid
£80 to put the door nearly (!!!) straight back on the car and have the
check strap changed, too.

All the best.
