I have a cluch or gear box problem in my fiat punto `96 1.2ltr.
when i press the clutch and try to put it into gear it sort of pops in after
i push it hard
and the reverse gear grinds as it going into gear i got to push it hard also.

Could this be a gear box problem or does it need a new clutch cable?.
I want to know this before i go to a garage.

Cheers
Brendan

The clutch might need re-adjusting, but it sounds to me like the thrust
bearing is worn - the clutch is not coming off completely.
Synchromesh in 1st, so no grinding - not in reverse !

From the top of my head, I think only a few of the 1.1's had a cable clutch.
If yours is as I suspect, hydraulic, it may be that it needs bleeding or has
a fluid leak. Have a look on top of the gearbox, and there you should see
the slave cylinder. Is the rubber seal at the end soggy and wet? If so you
may have a leaky cylinder.

Well i don`t about a hydraulic clutch, it has a cable running to a clutch arm

on the bottem right hand side of the engine the cable can be adjusted on the
arm by turning a nut and the clutch cable goes through a cylinder half way
down the
cable what this does i don`t know
the car is a `96 1.1 ltr left hand drive.

Ah yes, it is a 1.1! You said 1.2 at first. In that case it sounds like you
need to adjust the cable. It will stretch and the clutch materials wear over
time and the clutch operates in such a way that you have to press the pedal
down further to release the clutch fully. When you run out of room, its time
to adjust. According to the Haynes manual, you have to measure the clutch
pedal travel, which should be 140mm, plus or minus 5mm. This is done by
measuring from the centre of the clutch pedal to a fixed point, like the
base of the steering wheel, and then depressing the pedal fully and
measuring again to the same point. Take the smaller number from the second
and thats the travel. Adjusting the clutch is done by getting under the
vehicle, front left, probably you will need to jack it up at that corner,
and looking where the cable goes through the operating arm. There is a lock
nut and the adjuster, on a threaded rod on the end of the cable. You need
two open ended spanners to fit both of these. Hold the adjuster with one and
slacken the locknut a couple of turns, with the other. Tighten the adjuster,
to shorten the cable, a couple of turns then re-measure the pedal travel.
Repeat until it is correct, and then tighten the locknut. check that it all
works as it should and then have a well deserved drink of your choice! If
you happen to be at the end of the adjustment before you start, then that
would indicate that it may be time for a new cable or a new clutch, but one
thing at a time and do the easy and cheap things first!!
