Hi,

We have a P Reg (1996 I think) MK1 Punto which the wife has just
succeeded in knocking the silencer off by going too fast over a
speed-bump.

The break is about two inches from the back of the silencer and is
pretty clean. I've been quoted around £100 by KwikFit and the same for
a replacement exhaust from the local Fiat parts dealer.

Given the age and condition of the car I don't really want to spend
this sort of money if at all possible. Can anybody advise me if it is
possible to get a cheaper replacement silencer and middle part of the
exhaust from anywhere else? I'm based in Kent by the way.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice that anybody can offer.

Regards

Emmett

We just replaced the mid silencer (from just behind the cat) on our MK1
Sporting ... Cost was 50 quid for parts from FIAT. When we replaced the rear
part (from the mid box back, including the rear silencer) that was about 60
quid.

So, it depends how much/which piece needs replacing. You can get the parts
and fit them yourself. IMO Kwikfit, FIAT (and indeed any main dealer/fitter)
is very expensive on labour. Our SAAB, for example, is looked after by very
skilled independent mechanics who charge 30 quid an hour, compared to SAAB
main dealer who charge 90 quid an hour!!! I'd never use FIAT - always an
independent mechanic.

You could pop down to one of these back street exhaust fitters and have them
patch it up.
