My Stilo JTD 115 (2003 03 reg) is giving a warning of 'airbag failure, stop
engine.' I have switched off the passanger and back seat airbags to see if
that cleared the warning - it didn't. Has anyone experienced this type of
fault and if there is anything I can try myself?

No 1st hand experience. However you can check that the connectors and cable
underneath the driver's and front passenger's seats are all ok.
These cables/connections are quite vulnerable as they are exposed and also
have to cater with seat movement. The cables control/signal the seatbelt
pre-tensioners, the occupant presence and weight, and the seat side airbags.
