My Punto 90ELX, mod 96 is having problems when the engine is idling. It's an
intermittent problem. The injection light turns on and if the engine is
idling it just drops dead. Not very enjoyable when stopping at traffic
lights!!
Fuel filter is new as well as spark plugs. The actuator seems also to be
working fine.

Any idea what could be the cause?

Was trying to find a diagnostic software, any suggestions?

TIA

I think I'm right in saying:

1) If the injection light comes on but goes out when you restart the engine
then this is a soft/minor error not of a serious nature.

2) If the light remians on after stopping/turning off etc then this is a
hard error.  Hard errors have to be cleared by the Fiat Examiner (dealer or
suitably equiped garage only).  Hard errors can be self cleared by the
system IF the original fault is NO LONGER present AND the engines has been
started something like 20 times AND run for some twenty minutes each time
with the error not occuring again.

2) above if worth noting because if you know what the fault is and can
repair it yourself then the fault light will b e cleared down without you
having to visit the dealer.

In your case unless you know what the cuase of the fault is then you really
have to go to the dealer to get the fault code read.  Could be a simple
problem or more serious.

The dealer should not charge more than 15 to 30 mins labour to tell you what
the fault code is.  The Examiner once connected shows important fault codes
immediately.  Having got the code the dealer may have to do Active
Diagnostic Steps to explicitely pinpoint the problem more accurately.

I have also had this problem, i took it to the garage and they changed the temperture sensors on both sides of the engine.

But.

I still have the problem in the morning, when the engine has warmed up a bit and i have restarted the engine it settles down to the standard idle speed, but the rev neddle waves up and down a little and when i accelerate, it doesnt as you feel it should the revs move and you hear it but the power doesnt get there some times it splutters then does but then doesnt again.
