Stilo headlights

I just delivered my Stilo for the fifth warranty fix at the shop (both
seats stuck so you can't adjust them on the rails, thermometer shows
10 degrees more than real outside temperature, door lock frozen every
morning). I asked them how I should go about replacing the low beam
bulb on the left side. "You have to disassemble half the car. If we do
it for you it will cost you at least €60."

This is a scandal. If I'm out on the road and the headlight bulb goes
out, it's not enough to stop at a gas station and get it fixed. I have
to book a time to take the car to the shop. Or should I just call Fiat
Assistance and tell them that my car is not roadworthy and I want them
to fix it for free before I get pulled over?

Now to the basic question, how can I fix this myself? Do I need
special tools? Special things to think about?

Dumb question!  Have you read the owner's manual?

I've put my Stilo Abarth to bed for the night so I don't want to wake her
now :-)

From my last read I'm pretty sure there were instructions for replacing
headlamp bulbs.

Dumb question indeed. :-)
Yes, I have read the worthless manual where it says "Remove the
protective cover releasing the catch. Release the bulb holder
catch..." and so on, without a word mentioning that to get to this
protective cover you have to disassemble half the engine. Crap.

A Car-magazine in Finland did a test with various new cars of how to change
the light bulbs (i.e. how long it takes). I believe the verdict with Stilo
was to take it to the dealer (or shop or garage or whatever). Rumour has it
that it can be done from the wheel base after prying open what we call
"lokari" in Finland.

Hmmmmmm

Now I come to think of it the lights are recessed behind the bumper.

I'll check the Workshop Manual CD and see if that sheds any light on the
subject :-)

You maybe interested to know I got pulled on the  M1 Sunday night with a
blown headlight bulb on my Stilo abarth.
When I tried to explain I could not change the bulb very easily the
copper said Iwas not driving it anywhere then.
Fiat AA would not fix it at the side of the motorway so had to be
towed to the nearest dealer and then AA took me home.
All for a blown bulb absolutely disgusting
On a brighter note Fiat only charged me for a bulb but what a night.

Next time I'll go for that scenario. Fiat are the ones that should
hurt for selling such a ridiculous construction. But that's next time.
I got the bulb changed yesterday at a cost of €50, bulb not included.

As a matter of interest did you get any bulb failure warnings?

If so then I guess for all of us the message is switch to the fog lamps in
lit-up areas as no copper will be able to tell the difference on those cars
fitted with 'alongside' fog lamps like the Stilo, Punto, Coupe etc.

What makes me smile is all the boy racers and other duds (no not dudes!) who
drive round with their low level fog lamps on looking sooooo cooooool.  If
only they knew.

Nope. No warning. Same thing when someone bumped into the side of my
right light last summer. The bulb went without a warning.

Didn't need to check the workshop manual.

On my Stilo Abarth on the UK offside I can replace all bulbs in a matter of
minutes.  On the nearside/battery side then things are a little tighter
because one would certainly need to remove the large battery cover.  At
worst I would have to remove the battery and battery box.  The only case
where bumber removal is required that I can see is when the whole light unit
has to be removed, e.g. broken front lens/plastic glass.  This is confirmed
by my recollection of the service manager saying the people get upset by
stone damage to the headlamp glass requires the headlamp to be replaced
which also requires the bumper to be moved back and thus also requires the
engine undertray etc. to be released as well.
