the injection malfunction light comes on at high revs and the car
seems to reve by itself when i have the clutch in and foot of the
accelerator(between 1500 and 2500)i have been told that this has
something to do with a timing valve is that likely ?

Could be a faulty idle control valve (disconnect it and if the problem of
the revs hunting is still there then you can rule it out), lambda sensor or
air leak on the inlet (can't imagine that there is s a sensor for this
unless the inlet manifold pressure shows a problem) .  The best bet in my
opinion is to take it to  Fiat garage and get them to read the fault code
from the ECU - might cost ?40 but it will save an awful lot of time and
money if you start replacing the wrong parts.

Its definitely the idling actuator (aka idle control valve).  Mine did
exactly same thing last month!!  Cost around ?149 plus VAT but you can
easily fit it yourself in 10 mins.
